Coil Has Updated It's Site

They have something new called the grid. Maybe someone out there could share how it compares to the “old” Coil tech.

Dean, the grid has been discussed here a bit before. I could divulge what I know about it (just basics), but I’d rather Mike address it to get the info correct/from the source. You can get some background by checking out the coil ride reports thead. I think there may info regarding it nestled in other threads as well.

What is that grid material exactally? Looks like the same crap Al Merrick uses on the rails of that “helix” board I have seen around.

Looks cool, wonder how functional it is.

whatever the material is probably won’t be divulged.

Saw the first couple of these last winter when they were in the r&d stage. Very cool. The Braz bros do it again.

The pics of the Grid on that site are just hot. That stuff looks like a maybe carbon-fiber mesh reinforcement of the rail and kind of a deck patch wrap in the rear foot area–it just looks like it makes sense to reinforce those exact areas on a thin stringerless with light glass–by all accounts they’re really durable and strong and springy already–those guys have a pretty good flow of ideas and development—I should buy one instead of shaping my own… Swaylocks ruined me on buying boards…

Has MD gotten started raving on his hull yet on the hullathon thread?

ill bite

I have a fish with the GRID, with FUNKY fluo paint… on the coil ride report thread

it goes great, and looks even better, people first think it is for looks, kooks!

the flex is always great on those coils, and the grid aids in getting the control down better, and it resists denting better i believe, better point loadspreading, since it is stiffer…

But riding the boards with and without the grid is not a whole lot different i guess, but then again, i only have 2 coils, round pin, and one quad fish, so that is not a fair comparison…

and i want that sunova, and be near level with surfercross, just needing a griffin to complete my need for comparison

ooowie!

correction: I said light glass above–

they’re hyper-glassed—hypo-resined

The guys have removed everything that could be and reinforced critical areas–F1 inspired is right

Hey Wouter I will agree with you on the flex of the coil with and without the grid. The boards I have are different from each other so I can't tell if it makes a difference but I will say that Mike has me so dialed in that I think that any board he makes would go good if not great.I think that coil has developed a way of making custom boards that make compsands yesterdays news.My sunova is a great board but the coil gets there faster.Oh yeah I paid about 900.00 and that included the shipping from Thailand.

Now I’m curious about the Coil boards.  The only thing I’ve really found about the construction is that the boards are layed up with twice the amount of glass than a normal board, but lighter ounce cloth under vacuum bag?

Just out of curiosity if anyone out there could shed some light on it, that would be cool.

Darn,

That is shit for Bert. Maybe he should try concaves one day and work around customer demands, instead of his own beliefs.

But great news for Coil…

p.s. 900 Dollars inclusive shipping from Thailand, is the same price the guys here is asking for a second hand SUNOVA [edit].

I can only hope Coil Industries manages to reduce the weight on their boards one day.

Currently i am goin to build a 5’11192.25 with 1# core, compsand, and hope to keep weight under 4.4 pounds [us] which is 2.0 Kg, and yes, there will be a huge concave and glass on fins, and yes i do get inspired by the coil flex feel and build methods, and all that Info Mike Daniel shares with me and Swaylocks.

wrt glassing schedules on coils… that info will only be released after the secrecy acts retires… which will be like… NEVER, i hope to move to the States and buy in once mike retires, haha.

But i do know that to keep the thinner tail stiff enough, you have to add glass to that same thinned out tail, or it goes floppy.

And the fact that the weight is low, well, isn’t that the 15 years of refinement? The perfect combo of performance vs cost competitiveness ? The coils are FFFFF cheap compared to heavily glassed pinlined, polyester boards… If Mike decides to sell on a larger scale, his son can go to uni in a Porsche, and Mike can pick cars from the drive up… hybrid, long distance, sports, travelling… wow…

oh no, he is working his ass of and keeping things small time for everybody’s sake. Those who get a coil, should feel privileged.

Well, i believe i have spent enough time here, back to glueing my longboard compsand nose and tail blocks on !

Some of you guys are giving me too much credit here. Eric and Kirk Brasington are the ones who developed the processes and techniques that are the heart of Coil. They’re the ones achieving industry-best fiber-to-resin ratios. They’re the ones pioneering the use of new fibers and weaves. They’re the ones who’ve blown up a bunch of preconceptions about how surfboards ‘‘should’’ be built.
