Color Lamination /longboard

I’m making 10’ longboard, clear deck with color lam bottom. 2"cut lap on the deck. I heard two things, that it hard to do with theratio of color to resin to catalyst isn’t right the glass job can be ruined. The other is that it’s easy to done. But, I can’t find people with knowlege and know how to help me with things like the ratio and thing to look for, tips, etc. With the clear deck do I Lam the deck fist then the bottom and lap cut on top? All input will help, THANKS Dj

hey dj, The ratio of catalyst to resin is the one that should concern you–I would go 1% catalyst since you are doing a big board and this is your first time. I tape off the lap line on the deck, then cover the entire deck with butcher paper so that colored resin won’t find its way where it shouldn’t. Lam the bottom and rails first with lots of even strokes to get an even distribution of color. Listen for the sound of air bubbles and work them out. A tip from Swaylocks: once you’ve cut the laps and you’re ready to lam the deck, gently push the lap line into the foam (I use a roller for this), and finally, use a brush to paint a bit of lam resin (this is where UV comes in handy)along the lap line to prevent air bubbles when laminating the deck. Anyway, all of this info and more is in the archives. check it out. As for ratios of pigment in the resin, it doesn’t matter at all. Just add pigment until you get the desired color (you can also mix in black or white for opaques). Yellow and orange are the ‘easiest’ at first, as they are more forgiving. I’ve raised my blood pressure for sure for attempting light blue tints. Good luck, Jamie

thanks for the responce and I’ll try to get into archives DJ
