I don’t make surfboards, I make skimboards – the Divinycell foam, epoxy and carbon fiber kind – so I’m familiar with composite construction techniques. Anyways, I’ve been lurking here a while and think this forum is great and love the wealth of information here. Perhaps one day I’ll carve out a surfboard for myself. Just wanted to say that. Anyways, I’m doing a ding repair for a friends longboard. He had a poorly repaired rail that had taken on water and was turning soft and brown, so he wanted me to fix it right. I removed all the bad material, filled with resin and Fumed Silica/Microballons and glassed with 2 layers of 4oz. The repair is perfect, but it’s bright white (about the size of a golf ball) and though not necessary, I’d really like to paint the patch so it sort of color matches the slightly off-white yellowing foam. Can I just use the water based tempera art paints I have, paint over the white, and then gloss coat over that and polish to a shine to match the board? Are there bonding issues with the water based paint and the gloss coat? Any help would be appreciated.
