Color....will it cause problems?

I have been reading as many threads as possible about the color of the board.

I keep finding boards that are dark red, dark brown, dark blue and black.

I have read that black delaminates…is this true of all dark colors?

Why would they make all these boards?

I live across the street from the beach in SC…

I plan on surfing and coming home ( a walk of 200 yards) would having a dark colored board make a difference?

Would the wax melt off while surfing?

Would it get too hot to lay on?

Would using a different temp. wax work?

Should I not bother with a dark colored board?

Please help…I already had a custom made that the graphic’s and color was wrong…either going to have one shaped again or try to find a used one.

If it helps I mostly look at boards at the Mollusk Surf Shop, Moonlight Glassing and Surfy Surfy Blog.

Any help would be great. Thanks to all on site.

You’ll be fine with a dark colored board, just don’t leave it out in the sun for hours that’s all.

Really?

So as long as I don’t let it sit in the sun I can ride whatever color?

All black if I want?

A black board looks bitchen but shatter dings show up real bad and you’ll have a hard time keeping it waxed. The stuff will start to melt off just walking down to the beach on a sunny day. The same thing goes with any dark color. If your board is going to be EPS/Epoxy, dark colors aren’t that good of an idea because the weave of the cloth tends to show badly over dark colors.

what Atomnized said is definitely a good point, I was just referring to the delam issue.

Howzit salty, Are you going to build the board or have it built by someone else? The dark colors will delam like said before if left in the sun. If you are building it your self I advise staying away from dark colors unless you are a pro glasser. But if you do it with dark colors then you can put a sweet coat of thinned resin over the paint job before laminating it. this will stop the crystallation problem.Aloha,Kokua

Thanks for the advice. If I decide to go with a dark color I would get one that has been glassed at Moonlight…they seem to be the best. I may have to re-think the color for my board…orignally wanted a dark brown…then I started leaning towards black…but if it is going to be a constant pain in the A** then maybe I will stay away from it. Thanks again for the posts guys.

I lammed my first board black, but then again, I live in Ireland, we haven’t seen the sun here since 1850’s.

…the guys are correct

and if you go with dark colors

you cant put the board in the Sun

after you surf if you hang out in the beach, is a pain in the arse

a few minutes under the Sun in daily basis and the life span of the glass work will be reduced a lot

kind of brittle the resin work

so very good care of the board is the key

but avoid Black

Thanks for the responses. I know that black looks sooooo good but, it sounds like a mistake. I have a break in front of my house and one in a 10 min walk if that…but…don’t think its worth the hassle.

If I went dark blue I am guessing it would be the same…back to all white…wheeeee…I guess?

I looked at thread on here that has favorite resin combo’s and some of them seem to be on the dark side…I assume that the don’t care if board gets f**** up…they’ll just make another…wish I had that luxury.

Dark bottom would be ok right? Maybe I’ll do a light color on top then a dark bottom

example tan with chocolate bottom or grey with a black bottom, baby blue with dark dark almost black blue

?? IS could I pull the color around from the bottom to make a edge around the rail or would the dark color although minimal cause problems???

I found this board in the trash and decided to give it a new look since it only neded one minor 3" rail repair, the rest were pressure dents…
