coloring wetsuits

Has anyone ever painted or otherwise tried to change the color of your wetty? This is Tom Bloke inspired. Original color is black. I’m not sure what color i want to paint it (i’m thinking spraypaint). I may just get crazy…let me know so i can stop of at the local hardware shop on the way home from work…i’ll post pix too.

I guess my main concern would be the paint adhering to the rubber/neoprene. Would it bond well? It seems like maybe it would start peeling after a few sessions.

My friend she knows ppl that does holly wood special fx they use neoprene masks and paint on them / glue stuff on

Q. We are looking for a waterbased paint that will not scratch or peel off a neporene rubber surface.

A. This is a great question. Although I have not personally tried to paint neoprene rubber, I guess that you can use an acrylic latex paint, or a waterborne epoxy. What will the neoprene rubber be exposed to after it has been painted? Will it be exposed to sunlight or to chemicals? Your selection of coating will depend on the end use of the neoprene rubber.

I suggest that you first solvent wipe the neoprene rubber with a suitable solvent, perhaps isopropyl alcohol, which is not too strong, and then follow with either the acrylic latex or the epoxy. Sine I don’t have any first hand experience at this, I suggest that you perform some experiments and confirm that the coating will give you the results you require.

I would be interested to find out which coating you decide to use.

GACOFLEX HYPALON AND NEOPRENE COATINGS GACOFLEX H-22 can be used on neoprene or hypalon. GACOFLEX is not a suitable coating for PVC Plastic. Materials Needed * GACOFLEX paint (Item# 1932 or 1934) * GACOFLEX Thinner (Item# 1922) * GACOFLEX H-22 Activator (optional) (Item# 1937) * Natural bristle brush

Paints give extended protection from ozone and UV. Gacoflex may also prevent some pinhole leaks and lead to a longer life for your boat. One gallon should cover the tubes of a 14’ raft. Ratio: 1 oz. activator to 1 gal. of Gacoflex. Flammable - UPS ground only. Note: Pigment will settle during shipment

Hi Bizgravy, black neoprene won’t be the best background for bright colours, you might need a white undercoat !

Colour scheme wise, if you go for one colour you will stand out, anytime you use different colours mixed up (even bright ones) it tends to break up the shape and give a camouflage effect.

If you are into Flamingo (Bright pink) our wetsuit manufacturer just bought us ten sheets of Flamingo rubber (2mm and 3mm) this is a fair bit more than we are going to use this season so there’s some available. They (Bodyline wetsuits) do custom suits, so you could order a custom suit from them if you like !

Regards,

Roy

Color is a great way to keep people from dropping in on you.

No one has ever hosed me in a red wettie.Go custom or use textile paint or acrylic.

The textile paint at hobby stores needs a heat set.
