compound muck

what do you use to get out the compound that builds up in the finbox and leash plug?

Ice pick or tape first

been afraid to tape thinking I might smear tape sticky all over if the buffer got hold of it.

Wash it out or better yet blast it out with a compressor. Austin

air compressor

I leave the tape on.When I am at the end of the polishing job the heat caused by friction lets you peel it off. Also by leaving the tape on you avoid snagging the pad in the slot. This trick was taught to me by “Beef” “TheKing of Shine”…long time Central Florida polishing legend. R.B.

Howzit Mr. Clean, That’s the way I was taught also. I posted a thread stating so but I must have deleted it because I didn’t see the post. I leave it up to the customer to take the tape off the leash plug. Another reson to leave the tape on the box when you rub out is when you start to see the tape fraying you know the gloss is getting thin. Aloha, Kokua

Kokua I guess we take little things like this for granted…hard to remember because we do em automatically. You and me must have come from the same old school. R.B

Howzit Cleanlines, I agree, I think the difference between us elders and the youngers is we went thru apprenticeships to learn our trade. A lot of the newer guys just buy a video and go for it. Experience is still the best teacher and no video will ever replace it. Years ago somebody gave me the glassing 101 tape to watch and tell them what I thought of it. Well I fell out of my chair laughing at the laminating section, granted I liked the lam racks but when I saw how the lammer did the bottom, I just roared. I mean get real, a couple of passes with the squeegee just doesn’t do it. Also 1 of my shapers thinks the shaping 101 vid wants people to make mistakes ( never seen it). I would like to see Jim Phillips video so I could compare it to the 101 video. I’m sure Jim’s vid would be a lot more informative since he’s a real craftsman and wants to teach how it’s done the right way. On another note somebody told me the JC was out of business, and since I haven’t seen any new JC’s around for awhile, I’m beginning to wonder. Aloha, Kokua

I got the 101 videos and learned a little from all of them.I like the use of the thumb to run down the rails when flipping laps though. We can alwys learn. R.B.
