compsand howto available now

this is a little thing we got got cooking for newbies

based on the work of SABS,HUIE, and the rest of the compsand crew

this thread picks up where berts left off.

its about where we were two years ago and offers a really good start for small businesses and shapers

that want to get into composite boards.

the systems are based on the boatbuilding industry and traditional surfboard methods,

and was worked out through countless phonecalls, emails and pms by the founding members of the site.

there is no denying the expertise of the contributors of this system.

sabs runs a little(huge) operation building yachts.huies been making polys and wood boards for 50 years and the rest of us are artists, chemists, engineers and tinkerers

but its that fact that we SHARE our ideas, is what makes the system as good as any bigname tech

this construction lends itself to backyarder and small outfits and enables them to compete with asian epoxy imports.

this “how to” will allow small shapers to construct a perimeter stringer board with wood or foam components in around 8 to 9 hours.

of course, theres plenty more information than this in the compsand vaults

but at this stage we dont want to create confusion,so KISS

what you will find in this thread will be simple and to the point

and puts all the basics in one easy location .

this system basically makes a better board than epoxy asian imports

a strong finished board can easily be made in the 4 to 5 pound range

we are about 1/3 the way through at the moment

this is pretty cool paul, thanks for sharing. i have been interested in the compsand process and would like to attempt one in the coming year. i will be paying close attention as this unfolds.

Bravo!

Paul,

Thanks - its always great having an additional resource. I will certainly spend some time researching / reading prior to my first attempt at a build.

Thanks again for sharing

Looks great and all in one place, thank you.

Wicked! Thanks Paul and all other compsanders who contributed to this one.

Great idea paul, i checked the site out yesterday and saw it. Very good mate. Great work.

Compsand … coming to a shaper near you.

Paul,

That is a great resource. I’m learning asimpler way of approaching compsands, thanks. I

It’s not clear whether the board and rocker table are both placed in the bag or whether the board and bag lie on the rocker table. If the latter, or if a flat surface is used, how do you stop the board rocker deforming under vaccuum?

Thanks

Nice one Paul

I know I stumbled around making my first one.

This will be very helpful.

Cheers

ive only ever done the board and rocker table in the bag, but i think some ppl do do the board only?can anyone confirm this.you would need to weight it down tho.two bags perhaps?bag within a bag??.seems easier to just put the table and board in together.

must…resist…temptation…

j/k – thanks for a great resource!

I only bag the board, never the table. My bags arent big enough for both.

I simply put two weights on top to keep the bagged board firmly contoured to the bed.

Golden Rule: use whatever technique your most comfortable with.

i rekon you need pretty heavyweights though

would like to see the pics dave

i can see an advantage if you wanted to shape in concaves

and do you do both skins at once

true but i have heavy weights really handy so its no biggie for me

yeah adding concave is as easy as using thin balsa shims down the center of the bed plus weights along the rail

did both skins at once one time but it was fussy, the weather was hot, so it was very frustrating dehydrating my body to get two skins on in one hit so i vowed not to do it again. its much easier to work here in the winter but summer is flat so there’s lots more available time to make boards…im a gluten for punishment.

when i did both skins, i just prepped everything applied glue/resin and then taped the three parts together along the rail. sounds easy, and it can be, but i just dont practice enough…ive got too many boards as it is.

your thread is looking good!

btw, one of the keys for me is to make the skins just a wee bit wider (3-5mm) than the shaped core…that little bit of skin overhang makes for a tighter bond of the skin to the edge of the rail and serves as conduit for even vaccuming along the perimeter. i primarily use corecell skins, so post shaping the skin at the rail is easy but shaping cc in general is more work than urethane or eps b/c of its density and slight tackiness. designing thin rails makes life easier there and surfs better. gotta a wear a good dust mask that stuff isnt healthy.

Respectfully, I think that thread would be far more digestible if it was:

  1. broken out in to individual topics like grainsurf.com/forums does in the beginner forum

Step 1: making blanks and hot wiring

Step 2: making skins

Step 3: bagging skins

Step 4: you get the idea

  1. set up so that only one voice is heard…eliminate the noise from the threads like "hey,

this is cool" or “I prefer to do it this way”…at least let the OP get his post made and allow

for follow up discussion in the context of the post topic.

  1. more pictures
