How do most of you create a smooth stringer, at the beginning and end of a nose concave? Do you use a spoke shave, or another tool, to smooth it out? I’m getting ready to put a rather shallow concave in a 10’ board, and would like some practical advice. Thanks.

Thanks. you hit the nail on the head, in my mind nothing beats a small, sharp, spokeshave but my shaping partner does use a block–I ain’t changing, I got 30 yrs of using the same spokeshave!

Thanks. if the stringer is stubborn and narrower then the plane then i tape off the stringer with strapping tape and use a modified small smoothing (high angle)cheapo hobby plane. the smoothing plane would tear up the foam if you didn’t tape it off and a low angle plane tends to tear up the tape. the smoothing plane kind of grinds the stringer down as it rides on the tape. this is a last resort when i just can’t get the stringer flush. i was in the middle of doing one when i read the post so i took these photos. it works for me.
WOW! Thanks guys, and especially Gene. Your photos should be in an instructional “How To” book. What is the brand name of the strapping tape that you use?
