Concaves for performance shortbboards, how deep can you go?

I have a customer that has asked for a board with a 'Really deep’concave, the board will be 6 0 x 19 x 2 3/8.

Im just wondering how deep can I go until it starts giving negatives that would make it not work as intended. I usually dont go over around
7mm of concave. I think that my customer wants around 10mm minimum which I see as being a lot.

So how deep should I go?

Deep.

Check out Maurice Cole’s boards:

10mm will be fine, I do them that deep or more every day.

Ok, great.

Thats what I needed to hear, I can go ahead with confidence.

Thanks

Glad to see this

Been onboard with this since Tales from the Crook Shed.

First showed up.

my humble add.

Deepest under da feet

flat exit.

In many videos you can see water trapped under the rider due to the elimination of release in the centerline rocker .

A constant scraping look , instead of flowing forward .

Thanks for chipping in greg, could you explain that comment a bit more?

My understanding is that too much concave too near the nose can cause a ploughing effect so best to not go too deep too soon?

for my money, flat with a hard tuck is fast, particularly on EC slopey waves. When it gets a little steeper I believe a modest single concave is the all round utility bottom.

All the best

Maybe this might help

do not let your concave

mess with the entry rocker.

After that.

The last batch concaves started @18" behind nose.

with smooth transition.

Test rides proved

better paddling/ wave catching

However…

I observed a bog.

Mustly rider amping out a turn on energy lacking waves.

On single concaves

Hi mattwho,

Just read through that thread, I didn’t really catch everything from your writing style but I think I get it.

Im on that journey as well, the stage where there is very limited information on those tiny little tweaks that can turn a good board into an amazing board.

Those tweaks depend on the overall design style for everything to come together and work.

I just tried the channel concave (keeping the concave in the center of the board and not too far out to the rails) fast but too much of a compromise on turning , next time will head further in the other direction, Plus more rocker and deeper concaves.
I also have noticed that on some of the pros boards and most highly rated shapers sometimes have a very slight extra bend in the rocker at the trailing edge of the front fins. It looks like this can give more of a stable surfing platform while laying down big turns with the back foot, rather than having an increasing tail rocker flick at the end of the tail. Tiny little details, hardly noticeable to the eye.

More stuff to experiment with.

Regards to all.

Love that vid!

Used it to help my riders believe

in low rocker.

Concaves are like dicks… the deeper they go in the better they ride, ha!

No but really, as long as the curve of the concave is consistent and fits the curves of the board, the only negative I can think of from going too deep is having a weak ass stringer and a board that will snap under a heavy impact. I love them deep though, especially on my wakesurfers
