I left a can of sanding resin in the rain and elements for about two months. It rains fairly often in Santa Cruz and there is moistier in the can, rust on the inside and what i believe to be water in my resin. So the point is my resin ruined or is water resine not a big deal, perhaps just add more catalyst? Thanks
just buy some fresh resin…you and the board will benefit in the end
Throw it out! I wouldn’t even trust it for repairs.
Yeah I know, but I’m a real shades of grey kinda of guy. I count drops of catalyst, and eyeball the amount of resin. Catch the drift…I know the watery resin is crappy but how crappy? Will it not pop, sand well or cause a small nuclear explosion if i mix catalyst with it? My guess for water content is >3% Thanks
just toss it, its not worth it.
The consensus is to pitch it, ill go pour it down the strom drain (Not really)
Yep - I’ve tried fixing fiberglass boats that were wet and the resin never went off. Stayed gummy, kinda like crystals in grease, had to be scraped off. Though- if you really want to find out, why not try pouring some in a cup, adding catalyst and see what happens rather than listening to our wild-ass guesses. just a thought doc…
After all the time and effort that you put into shaping a blank or doing a repair, do you really want to risk having your work ruined? When in doubt ditch it!
just go drop the $18.00 for a fresh gallon. It doesn’t have much of a shelf life anyways. -Jay
I’ve used old resin in rusty cans and it usually works – although the water in it might be a problem. I’d at least test it. If it works, why throw it away? If it doesn’t, dispose of it properly. As they said in WWII, USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT, MAKE IT DO.
Polyester resin vented to atmosphere causes evaporation of the basic building block Styrene from the mix. I think this causes the resins mechanical properties to change to more rubbery and less hardened finished product. Apart from this other contaminants (water / rust / crickets ) would also have some -ve effects, whether you can detect what these are may be another story. Its a lesson in looking after your things more carefully.
Just pour some catalyst in the can and toss it after the resin goes off and cools down. Then go and get a new can and store it in a cool dry place. Let the cost of your mistake only be the $18 for the resin, not an additional $100 for the blank and glass you are about to ruin by trying to use bad resin.
wait a minute… …you left a can of resin in the rain for TWO MONTHS!!! WTF!!! And you are worried about it NOW… All these people responded trying to fix the “problem”. Let’s identify the problem first… …Clearly, you need to move to a more arid climate! [wink]
YOU SAY YOU WANNA REVOLUTION…start now…mix that krappage up spread some on some test material ie plywood ,foam,a rock, a dismembered thumb an old fin scrap, assorted road kill…well dried, and other as you would and watch what happens…you may learn somthing beyond your present understanding of this polyester gunk thak few will ever see because they never had the chance…whaddya got to looooooose…now tell it like it issssssssss you gotta stop now whats that sound everybody look whats goin down…use the squeegee on the plywood add some color spread white into blue while still runny…add some styrene …squirt in some more catalyst drip some red onto the whitg let i spill over into the blue cet a stick and drag it through the whole thing and then stop and watch the pigments and tints roil into cosmic chemical undulations until it goes off then mix another batch and add surfacing agent and hot coat the sucker memorializing your mortal sin of two month neglect of dinosaur blood …ambrose…try it release the ? in your soul and reveal the you to yourself that longs to say hello how are ya…nice ta meecha
Do you think if you poured some resin over a dead carcas, would city workers bother to clean it up? Especially if it was on the side of a highway or something, not making a speed bump. http://www.uliboards.com
how do u forget resin int he rain for 2 months? thatswhat i wnana know. even if u left it out, did it not have a cap on it. sounds crazy. dont use it, and dont put it on a carcas.
SHOOT! Here in Honalula it’s 35 clams for a gallon. You only drop to the 18 range at the five gallon quantity. What kinda resin is that, purple art resin?
Good point, Charlie. At 18 bucks a gallon the guy leaves the resin in the rain. At 35 smacks a gallon he would have been more careful!
$18.50 per gallon at Mitch’s surf shop. La Jolla & Solana Beach Ca. Just regular old surfboard resin not the purple stuff.
hard to believe all get to see the words of a master on the internet…this guy knows…what a privalige
