Just came in from my first surf on my EPS epoxy - twinny - made it for a twin fin comp which is tommorow - and i think it will be sacrificed to the fire afterwards.
I love the shape, minus a little of the tail rocker - but the glass job resembles a dogs breakfast - and i mean a dogs breakfast - hence it is headed for the bin.
It rode well - surprisingly - skatey - but when the fins hold it runs well. Basically i loved shaping but hated glassing. I am buying a standard board and am going to recreate the same blank with some improvements and then get it glassed by someone that knows what they are doing..
3 things -
best blanks to get around Sydney nsw
off hand anyone close to wolloongong, nsw - keen on some cash for a glass job.
All sounds familiar - I love to shape and am happy with what I can produce but am crap at glassing and usually end up f#$cking it up when I glass myself.
There are a few good blank manufacturers in Sydney but any blanks you get in the area would be fine.
Dion Chemicals in Brookvale are good
You wouldn’t go wrong if you got your hands on a Burford from a supplier (not made in Sydney though)
Glassers - go speak to a few shapers, there is bound to be a few good glassers around.
Jumping into your next shape is the best thing to do right now
You’ve shaped your first board
You’ve ridden it and understand what works / doesn’t work
Now refine your shape and come up with something better (don’t try to copy your last one, rethink and refine and come up with something new)
I can count the amount of boards/composite boards I’ve made on one hand and my shaping and glassing is far from perfect,to top it off I’m kind of a violent sander, but I love the process and making my own rides is priceless.Glassing is one of my favorite parts because I react well under a bit of pressure. It keeps me connected to the waves when there are none.I like the working time epoxy gives me as a beginner also,I can barely glass a 6’ poly before it kicks. If I could afford the materials I would build more boards and progress alot faster,it just takes practice.
Whats the big deal??? If it rides good then ride it and have fun. I can glass real good and will go overboard for a customer looking for perfection. However on a lot of my own boards I would just get em done. Best board I ever had was twisted like a pretzel and filled with pinair. (maybe that’s why it floated so well). My thoughts for the day.
learnt a bucket load from my first board and have done a huge amount of research and will happilly tackle it all again. i think i will stick to epoxy due to the work time! My biggest problem last time was my laps, i wasnt saturating them before folding them over.
