a friend of mine puts his back fins at 5" from the tail tip . he does baby swallow tails or rounded squares for his thruster template quads. He has all four fins the same [thruster] size , toed in towards the nose . he loves them , and has made 5’11 to 6’6 versions. Maybe like chipfish61, you could experiment with putting three plugs each side for either your front or back side fins ? Then you will get an inch or so of movement to experiment with . Try different sized and templated fcs fins in the setup , please take some photos , and let us know how it goes , and which setups you like best . So you can be a part of the communal learning process for all of us , too eh? thanks !
Ok I will surely take photos when I do it but as of now I do not have the uhh… balls I guess you can say to commit to it.
it is on an existing board
so i need a drill holesaw thing… this seems like it could be useful http://www.foamez.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4_80&products_id=210 , but i’m sure that if i knew what size it is and how deep it should be so i could mark it off to know when to stop it could be just as effective and probally much cheaper. so that information would be very helpful.
also where could i get one of those rubber things?
and could i use old crappy plastic fins that i don’t use anymore to cover the plugs or are those things special?
The fcs foam rubber thingys are good , because they contain any resin overflow , and help align those little “antennae” type side bits that hang off the fcs plugs , to get the plugs in straight , AND level , too ! … [yes, you can use the plastic fins in the plugs [or make some wood ‘dummy’ ones ]
[tip…[unlike me in this shot] … use white pigment , mixed in with the resin , milled fibre , and catalyst , to give you the nice white border that you see in the BACK two plugs in this photo below…]
then carefully sand the plugs flush to the deck [we used an orbital sander]
…maybe you can end up with a multi plugged board like mine , by also doing the two extra plugs for a single fin setup ?? [just a thought]
Yes , doing that , it would end up a bit more tail heavy ! But , as long as you’re okay with that , then multi fin options are a LOT of fun to muck around with , mate !
as of now i am still trying to make sure i know exactly what i am doing… which now i am pretty sure of i am.
but now i need to find a place for the supplies. my local shops don’t have plugs and they jack up there prices a lot on glass.
so i am searching for a place online that i can order fcs plugs, milled glass, resin, catalyst, marking out template thingy, quality sidebite fins, and… i believe that is it. anybody have any suggestions one 1 or 2 sites that i can order all of those things from (preferebly one)
well i finally did it and turned out pretty nicely… didn’t use proper tool now did i remember to take photos but it did turn out nicely. if i get the camera working soon i’ll take pictures of the finished product.
i will tell you how it rides and again if i get the camera working i’ll get some photos of the board in use
well i used it yesterday in waist high waves and the other day in shoulder high waves and i was very suprised at how much drive it gets through all of the turns without sacrificing looseness. i was able to do turns that usually would result in total loss of speed.
still trying to get camera to work… may need to get a friend to help me with that
