Shop around Brenden, you can get some of the stuff at Bunnings, make your own calipers/set square etc.

DVD’s you can borrow from someone…

Lot’s of info in the archives here too…

What!!! No Resin!!!

Probably looking at around $400 to do your first board…

Don’t forget, some of these costs will be one off. Planer, calipers etc.

that kit is for those who want to write the check and make it easy

instead of reading and shopping.

Not really worth a comment or thought unless your completely buggered into indecision

by the whole process.

Hi mate,

The cost of the kit is reasonable for what it is but in my mind it’s overkill for your first board but worthwhile if you plan on shaping a lot of board… comes with nearly everything you need.

To get your costs down:

  • Ask around and borrow shapers 101

  • Plan out all the tools you need

  • You can make your own racks, calipers and Fred tool (from Shaping 101), sanding blocks

  • Start looking around in Bunnings, second hand stores etc. for tools. Good quality secondhand planes and spokeshaves are easy to come by… I like the older ones better - they made them to last in the old days

  • Borrow power tools from family / friends… buy them once you know you’ll be shaping more boards and you know what you want

Blank should cost you around $100 - a little more or a little less depending where you go

Glass, Resin and consumables for glassing will cost you somewhere around $200 - again depends where you go

Fins and fin system somewhere between $60 to $100 depending on what you go for.

Check the archives on here - heaps of info

You don’t need to be up for $700 plus freight

For the price of a one top name surfboard I set myself up to shape and glass. Now boards cost me materials and my labor only.

Your list does not include planner , shop vac , surform , shaping stands ,resin , gloves ,tape ,respirator ,ect… [*]Foamez.com would be a good place to compare kits. Not sure the dollar exchange rate. Do some swaylocks research. Most shaping tools are for wood working. It’s a grand adventure…

Make yourself some stands, easy as. I have a planer you can borrow if you want to ( i dont use power tools, one second to slip up, one week to fix ). I have the shaping and glassing dvd’s im more than happy to lend to you. Dust masks and gloves etc bunnings. Blanks, resin, cloth and sand paper are the only real costs, and a board costs me less than 200 easy.

Cheers

P.S just about to head out, supposed to be 5’ and pumping, hope my old knee injury doesnt play up hahaha

Well, thanks for leaving that comment…I think

Thanks everyone for the feedback and info, not so daunting now. I have a number of woodworking tools so should be pretty sorted on that, will make calipers and stands from info I’ve found on here. It’s one of those “you don’t know what you don’t know!” so will be asking a number of dodgy questions through the process.

Beerfan

Would appreciate the offer of the loan of the glassing & shaping DVD. Went out yesterday at Towradgi, got some good waves. Saw you ended up with a friend and a snapped Mal. I like the tufflite shortboards but the tufflite mals do seem “stiffer” than normal boards and they really “bob” around on the surface. I’ll PM u about the DVD’s.

Thanks again everyone.
