Hi everyone its my first post and first board!! and my first go in AKU
Just wondering if you could cast an eye over this for me commenst very welcome… ive been riding a 5.9 by 20 quad round noise and love it in all waves so far, gets in easy turns and holds well… so ive decided to jump in and have a go… shaping room /shed almostt done !!
Hey Man, it is difficult to comment without more information. What type of waves, hollow or mushy? Are you strictly back-footed or do you turn off your front foot too? How much do you weigh? Height? Will this be a quad? Backside or frontside at the local break? Beachbreak or reef or point waves?
Your rocker would lend itself to mushier waves. You can shift the foil (thickness) around and maybe moved some of it back a bit if you are over 160-170 lbs. Fill us in on the stats and comments will come.
Im 36yrs old 75 kilo and been surfing for 20 years and have always ridden bog standard thrusters, im on 6.0 - 6.1 by 19 ish by 2 7/16, thrusters and quads, squash or rounded squash tails.
I got a nick blair subscript in 5.9 by 20 by 2 7/16 rounded nose and rounded pin quad and ive loved it, never going back to a standard size/shape, ive ridden it in 2 foot mush and its goes and 6 foot dredgers, i am a little undergunned in that, but i find it just “fits” drops are late but it smoothly cuts a line and i have been having loads of waves and fun… I decided im never going to be a pro!! so its all about fun and wave count not the most radical move…
i guess its a little thick as about 27 litres seems to be good for me so ill aim for the 30 ish… and ill make it a quad…
I took a photo of the wizard sleeve and imaged it in aku to get the planshape and just researched for a rocker, i dont really know what im up to and just wanted some imput as to whether ive made any fatal floors!!
Hey Rob, The main thing is, if this shape turns you on then most likely you will surf it well. Provided that the shape is tailored to your usual break. If you want hollow steeper waves, then I'd give it a bit more tail rocker. As far as outline dimensions you have a workable form. The only thing (which is most of it) is distributing the thickness to where you are going to need it. FOIL IS IMPORTANT. From the slices it looks like it will be double concave through the tail so you may be back footed. The thickness will work as is. If the design stokes you, then it will be fun to ride. After that it will be a matter of figuring out all the little stuff from surfing it and going with the amended shape on the next one until you dial it in perfectly. GOOD LUCK! Make it. Ride it.
All My comments are about my personal taste in boards and board design, First nice effort. Looks like the start of a nice egg style board.
I would add a touch more rocker to nose and especially the tail. and take some off the nose template maybe 14.75? in shaping blunt the rails in the nose. Another thing to think about is pulling the wide point back from center by an 1"-2" That will give you a bit more curve in the tail outline. also take a tad off of the nose curve allowing better entry on take off. most volume will still be under the chest. All this is my personal taste something to think about.
