Oops i’m not a “Big Boy”, although the ladies tell me I am
For me my compands ride pretty well, at least as well as the Pu/Pe’s I used to make.
A Pu/Pe from the store down the road, made by a pro, will still ride better than my home made board, i’m no pro yet!
But i’ve got them beat on weight and durability.
Heres my opinion - Pu/Pe has many decades of refinement invested into it, to get the right shapes etc. to perform as well as they do with the materials used.
I know there arre many people who have been doing EPS/Epoxy/wood/other foams for a while, but just imagine what could be achieved if the majority of board makers used epoxy for multiple decades… That would be an even playing field, and the results would be amazing.
My vote for Epoxy-related tech - it’s good enough now, and it’s got crazy potential…

How many boards qualifies as a big company? But for this little fish I say “Poly” we do both but I prefer the look and feel of poly.

Hi Troy -Everyone should simply ask their sander which they prefer.
so far i preferred shaping PU to eps
though i’m yet to glass with epoxy
Gotta have both, here in Hawai’i!! Yes, even my shaper buddies…guys w/25+ years of shaping agree on this. There’s a right board for every situation. Be thankful our shapers have open minds to all things shapeable!!
Do I get to vote?
The BIG BOYS?
Rusty is 80%+ epoxy
Surftech is 100% epoxy
Lost is somewhere around 50/50 from what I hear
CI is still mostly PU/PE with some epoxy
Firewire is 100% compsand epoxy
So those are the big 5 and where they stand today.
As for me I first rode an epoxy board 25 years ago and have never looked back. That was early 80’s and I thought it was revolutionary in performance, like the first time I rode a shortboard back in the 60’s.
That board is crazee! You are a madman (and I mean that in a good way).
I’m actually digging the PU blank with epoxy route. Best of both worlds. The nice pre-made blank that I get to use tools I am familiar with, the strength of the better glue, and can use either epoxy or PU to repair. One out of 5 boards are EPS/epoxy these days. PU + epoxy is picking up steam though. Greg’s epoxy is super easy to use. I love the time I have even with fast hardener. I can lam and pound a beer before my time is up.
Thanks for the kind words Herb.
What was DaveO’s thinking? That was a good board. Is he back on a fish trip again?

Is Firewire really in the “big 5”? Surely not in boards made or sales, right? If they are, SF must be really weird because I’ve still yet to see a Firewire in the water or in any shops.
I was thinking the same thing–the #5 spot (if not the #1) is surely the people that make all the popouts for Merrick, Seven, asstd off-brand crap names I can’t think of right now etc, isn’t it?
Funny thing is to google Anacapa Surfboards, and watch Al Merrick on video talking about his popout line through those guys–looks like he’s talking about turds with his name on them–funny/sad
http://www.surfindustries.com/products/anacapa.html Each model has a vid of him talking (Funny/shittily-ironic name brand–“surf industries”) --looks miserable in all of them
I suspect CI, Rusty, Lost, and Surftech do hold the top 4 and I bet #5 is a longboard brand.
Is Firewire selling more than brands like Becker (about 5,000 boards a year)? There are a dozen or so shapers/brands in that level of sales aren’t there?
Hey Chris,
I rode DavO’s (not his anymoe,Bra !) And…
…I LOVE IT TO DEATH !!!
…I noticed the usual drag from the side fins so I Supercharged it…PLUS…polyurethaned the bottom…
Man does it go !!!
Hey Chris, Got some more ???
Okay…I thought I had my mind Made up ?
Now I’m Cornfused again…Shit !
I think the poly blank and RR combo is the hot ticket…I can see Beavis and Butthead now…
YA,YA,YA…HE,HEE,HE,HEE,…LOL !
Right now FW is out producing everyone else in the business … in fact more than anyone ever has, and the numbers are continuing to rise.
FW is producing about 500 a week right now and will build in the 30,000 to 40,000 range this year. More than any other manufacurer of one label… by far.
You are not planning on them being collectors items then ?
