cover of surfer

Did you see the cover photo of Nathan Fletcher? Oh my God!!!  Mike

It seems to me that these guys are venturing beyond the point of survivable wipeouts.

The survivability limits are getting close in some of these places.

Note for the easily queasy…http://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/6105-keala-kennelly-severely-injured-in-teahupoo

I should not have been eating a sandwich while viewing that.

Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

That’s what they used to say about Pipe and Waimea.

The things that were being attempted on the North Shore back in the 50s and 60s are childsplay compared with what is being attempted today.  I think these guys are nuts.

Quite possibly so, but I'm more inclined to believe it's being a slave to the camera, with the hope of fame and glory.

Mako224, no offense but, it is apparant that you've never paddled out at the Bay, or Pipe, or Sunset on a swell of consequence. It is ANYTHING BUT childsplay. Plus the equipment being used was like driving an older model car without power steering or brakes....it'll still get you there and in style but not as easily driven. I understand your statement but don't diminish what happened back then. It is always serious sh^% when it gets big.

The best surf picture ever…

that is what i was thinking.

You’re right.  What do I know.  I’m just an old kook.  ; ^ )

The scale may be different, but no one knew what they were really getting into when they first rode Pipe and Waimea. Waimea was the unknown realm in its day. People didn’t know if they could survive a hold down, and the death of Dickie Cross at the Bay some years earlier added to the assumed danger.

That’s what they said about Noll, Stange, Munoz, et al in 1957.

I think I peed in my pants a little bit.

That’s real? No Photoshop?

Look at the white water explosion from the lip!!!

And you were right Mako224, this is serious sh%^!! Maybe a step up.
