crazy lamination

…the other day, I was lam a custom 6 2; put the cloth onto the bottom, cut and start with the resin, minutes later, almost finished all the process, I notice some brown stains near the front fin places…man droves me crazy, I had got only few minutes to start all over again!

-remove the cloth (without remove the logo), remove the stains (with the squeegee), put another sheet of cloth, cut, lam again…fewhh!lucky that the shape was a 6 2 not a longboard. all with the same batch of resin…

-this is the first time that this happened to me…man I lam a lot of shapes…

-well I always used Hexcel cloth (different types), but in the last 150 boards I had been using BGF Aerialite…

-yes, with some volan clothes (not premium clothes) sometimes you ve got “blacks” glass strings, but not brown stains…

hey reverb,

I have noticed the same brown spots with hexcel. Didnt notice the stain until it had cured. Once cured we laminated a cloth inlay over it.

…Austin,

I never had a problem with Hexcel premiums…

…lucky enough that I saw in the work-gel time cause in this type of board an inlay is not a good adition…and the customer dont want anything except a white board…

well, this might not be the actual case with you but ive had something that sounds very similar happen to me a number of times, so something to consider i guess…

at one point i was noticing yellow/brown spots that would appear while or very shortly after laminating…

these were usually on the deck in the area around where my fin boxes were set in…i would never see the yellow untill it had been glassed over…

anyway i came to the conclusion that as i was setting the fin boxes i was placing one latex gloved hand on the deck side as i was pushing in the box… the glove was likely previously wet with acetone but not wet when i touched the board…but just to be safe, i just stopped wearing a glove on that hand, no brown spots since.

…yes, some latex gloves can be a problem, but not in this case, the problem was the cloth…

…some latex dont like the styrene, so if you stay more than 8 minutes handling the resin and using the hands for the laps, etc, may be is safe to use the “2 colors” gloves, not as good for the feel but not stain…

thanks
