Curved Channels and step stingers

Hey guys, I have a fucked blank that i can use for ANYTHING and I’ve long been curious about the Step Stinger as utilised by Aipa … I reckon I’d have some fun with a contemporary versioin. Anyone had experience with these? I don’t just mean the big flyers, I mean the step in the rocker. I 'd love to collect some pix. Also, curved channels ala Col Smith and Phil Frazer?

hi Josh !

have you seen the latest “waves” , I think it is …the “why is surfing going backwards” [retro] issue ?

Some good examples of curved channels taken to the extreme there !! [jet bottoms, by erle pedersen’s neighbour , up in Agnes Waters !]

There SHOULD hopefully be a “stinger” thread here somewhere [search facility] , and I’m sure I posted one of my brother’s step bottom here somewhere …

edit

okay , a “step bottom stinger” search revealed …

Tom Petersens fireball fish had a step bottom and belly channels leadind into it between the fins.

Hey Chip,

It was indeed the good Ol’ shot of MR with THAT quiver that has got me keen to try the Step Bottom Stinger, though I have held a Klemm Bell version in the flesh. Could only be a small wave thing for sure. I’ve just got the urge to bust out something outrageous for the sheer fuck of it! Post any pix if you got um’

I’m into the jet bottom in concept, but since I am my own sander…!!!

Josh.

Those jets are o’k , bugger to sand and when you ding it you fix ten dings not one.

paging Ben Shipman…

didn’t you have an Aipa step bottom stinger you found , at one stage ??

meanwhile , here’s three of my brother’s boards for you Josh … a “Summercloud” [Coffs Harbour company , apparently] with step bottom , a Dick Brewer stinger [without step bottom] , and a curved channels [jet bottom] ‘Pipedream’ board…

[“Gator”] Dave , aren’t YOU getting a “stinger” shaped soon , too ?

…will it be a single fin , step bottom ?

I’D be keen to see that too , please !

cheers !

ben

I still haven’t counted out the idea of making another stinger …I want to improve on the last one I made , that’s for SURE !! [That was a ‘strip and reshape a dumpster board’ job ]

I just heard some sanders down the way getting ill ???# HAHAHA, go for it i always say! Plan on sanding it yourself though…How about some thumb grooves on the deck also!

M.P.'s “Moonrocket / fangtail / christmas tree” rail channels …Pa Bendall contest , 1975

CRIPES!! imagine going over the falls straddling that cheezegrater!

Check the early bonzer, too…

“cheesegrater / meatball mincer”

…more grate [tehehe] names for the M.P. creation !!

ben

p.s. - yep, that’s “P.T.” [Peter Townend] with the pink bonzer and boardies…

OOh that Summercloud Stinger is velly Noice!!!

Sorry guys I already shaped the mutha!

Went to work and the glasser hadn’t done the promised 6 for me to sand so I had some time on my hands… Too bad shaping mad ones for myself ain’t too lucrative… But I’n sick to death of 6’2" squaretail Thrusters!!!

I did the step with a curve! Ooh! Will post pix.

Post more outrageous design pix.

this may interest you Josh …

I met a bloke with a “tubestix” stinger at the beach this evening . Glassed on fin , around 6’8 x 20" , the guy reckoned .

…shaped by Maurice Cole !! [around 1973ish …leash hole in the fin !!]

…see the step bottom here ?!

" Buttons " …

Pancho Sullivan , on a straight six channelled Gabe Gadarque [?sp?] shaped single fin…

1996 [ I think !] … this was 5’11" x 19" [ x 2 5/8" , roughly]

yes indeed… a curved step bottom !!

Chippy! I could not find those pictures of the Aipa Stinger. I am still looking though… I do know that is was not a step bottom… and the board was so thick it could have floated five big fat momma’s at belly’s depth. It was not a very functional board for a 155 lbs dude like me.

Speedneedle…I can’t wait to see how you painted that board…

Chip, if you can give me fin placements I’ll make a 6’4 x 19 x 2&3/8 with the same channells and step , swallow tail but with speeedfins. It will be a rocket . or if you can supply deadly dimensions for a sick board I’ll shape that same set up . it will be a stock board and will go in a shop and 10% will go to tsunami relief as does 10% of all my stock boards . I do around 5 a year. It will be the chipfish 05

thanks mate !

I sent you a p.m.

and if I come up with any other ideas / drawings / dimensions , I’ll be sure to send them to you !

ben

I’d definately like to see a 6-6’2" version of M.P’s fangtail pictured on this thread [single fin with box fin though …I’ll send you the fin , if you like]

ben

…if it was a TRIPLE winger , how about doing it as a six channel …one channel for each wing ?
