Cut lap bottom/painted deck

I’d like to do a cut-lap pigment for the bottom of my next board with an airbrushed (on the foam) deck. I saw one in the TFAD photo thread. My question is, do you lam the bottom then spray the deck, or spray the deck before you lam the bottom? My concern is in taping off. If I spray first, I’m worried about the tape for the cut-lap, pulling off the paint. If I lam the bottom first, then I’m assuming I’d have to tape off the rails (to prevent overspray) before I paint the deck. This worries me because of the possibility of paint bleeding through onto the glass, and/or, tape residue gumming the lam. I’ll probably pinline over the seam anyway but I want the cleanest edge I can get.

Forgive my lack of expertise; I’ve been building my own a long time but only recently have I tried to get creative with any aesthetic or graphic work.

I seem to remember a recent post (was it by Kokua?) about this very topic. And what was advised to do was paint the deck first while taping off the rail roughly where your cutlap is supposed to take place, then tape off the whole deck and do the tinted lamination on the bottom, slightly overlapping the deck paint. Then a pinline will hide the very narrow “junction line” between tinted glass and sprayed deck.
