I never showed this in the Master Glasser Video but here is another way to do cut laps.

You need one of those little air grinders or something similiar with 60 grit. Basically you are going to grind the lap line.

Tape off the board as usual but add 3 layers of tape at the line. This gives you an elevated surface. Glass the board and let the resin cure all the way. Take the grinder and sand (carefully) through the glass at the tape line. The waste glass will break free leaving a super clean line. The  three layers of tape are the key to this deal and the little grinder. I use an air powered tool with a 3 inch rollock disc.

This works great when you can’t see the tape on an opaque glass job. I baste a coat of lam resin on the line before glassing the other side or hot coating. A guy named Clay Bennett showed me this trick one day and I was stoked as hell. It’s very easy to do and almost foolproof. Have fun!  Roger Brucker

Hiya Roger,

When i try and lap those kind of elevated surfaces, there is always a little air pocket along the tape.

Is that the -right- way to do those?

Tucking your laps at an angle… sort of pulling around the rail, then sweeping the tuck toward the closest end of the board works for me. Pushing the squeegee straight toward the stringer pulls the loose ends out onto the bottom. That little turn seems to help minimize this. If there are any long strands, I’ll just pull them off and let them hang 'till it’s kicked, then snap them off.

Thanks for that advise,

Some really handy tips.

Put down the first two layers of tape one over top the other.

Lap the last of the three layers of tape over the other two to form a ramp that the glass rises up on doing away with the air pocket…
