cutlap uniform color

i’ve been reading up some threads i think i have a handle on this but i wanted to make 100% sure before i go at it.

i’m doing my first color epoxy job and i’d like to keep the color uniform on deck and bottom. here’s what i think is the sequence:

  1. tape of the deck and glass the bottom, as it gels cut the lap on the deck and peel back butchers paper/tape.

  2. after it’s kicked, knock down the lap with a surform. tape the rails to the cutlap on the deck and do a freelap color deck job

  3. when that’s all kicked, complete with a clear freelap on the deck.

is this correct? i get hung up on the deck…do i tape off to where the deck glass laps over onto the deck and do an inlay free lap?

thanks guys for the answers ahead of time. and thanks to Austin and Kokua for the most clear advice i found in my search.

are you trying to get the same color tint top and bottom?

id think you can either do a cut lap top and bottom using the same color and or do it like you said by doing a bottom cutlap then inlaying that same ccolor on the deck then clear capping it.

make sure to tape off the inlay. hope that helps

you dont want to cut the lap “as it gels”. let it kick before you try to cut, if not you’ll end up pulling glass with the blade and end up making a messy, ugly cutline.
