cutting cloth for swallow tail?

When are you attacking this glass job??  LeeV doesn’t mean do a foam stain, what they are saying is, when you wrap your lap in the buttcrack,there will be spots the cloth doesn’t hit,in these spots you just spread your colour while your tucking your laps and then patch with clear after it kicks and you have cut your lap.

then sand your clear patches smooth so your deck layer lays nice and flat over it.

Usually when you try doing coloured patches you will see them where they meet the main cloth thats also coloured because you will have a double up of colour.

The clear patch way is the easiest and looks the cleanest, unless one of the pro guys chime in and tell you their secrets.

Unless you do Blue fins way where your lap goes into the buttcrack, which looks nice too ,but from what i gather you are wanting your cutlap to trace your entire swallow tail shape??

 

I want a even perimeter around most of the board (2" band), and maybe -just 1/2" above the buttcrack a clean meeting of lines…not real high, but the lines should look right FWIW.Thanks for your.02

Upfront - I’m house painting still ( almost done!).then I will contact -Mike to glass over at his place, pick up a wetsuit, and get out n test ride my designs, and maybe pick up a fish/egg blank (over 7’4") to build my re-creation of board that started all this shortboarding fun… here’s my ’ pulled in tail Fish!’ I did the touch up work in the am - she’s ready fir glassing!

I say go for it. I myself dont like being told I cant or shouldn’t do something cause its too hard. Doing it is how I learn even if I goof it up. The next time will always be better than the first. My first SUP was a 12 footer and also the first time using epoxy. I was told dont do it its too big to start with. I closed my ears and did it anyways. Came out nice. Learned a shit ton. Was nervous as hell too. Good luck with your board.

thanks again -Sir! I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU taking time off to help out. I now feel comfortable about my glassing of my board. Anyway, I plan to do it sum sorta blue gray, or lighter toned opaque turquoise blue? Might do a cobalt blue pin line? Possibly lavender purple? I’ll drink a pbr after work. Gonna stop into Oneills, or Rip curl outlet to try on sum suits! I hope they got that stinkin wax I used to get that smelled like ant spray!? Lol that gray blue wierd smelling Hard wax for a base coat…

Agreed, go for it! Yeah, I’m going to prepare everything ahead of time, tape n mask off, and…execute! FYI I watched a glassing vid 3 x’s in a row so I know i gotta saturate cloth around 2-3 times, then pour a water fall along rails…then work the laps down ftom center to tips, and use free hand to assist…make sure no bubbles at tips. Fill weave etc., leave hopfully flush, tight and clean. I’ll have to be on my toes I think. Hope n It all goes as planned! I’ll rehearse the steps before I pull the trigger. Thanks again -Bluefin! Hopefully you could visit us for a build party sometime! If anyone else would like to visit and shape - let’s do it! I got sum tools, got a few secret surf spots…enough beer to keep me going! Shapa the same process I spoke about goes for what you’re wantin “2 inch border around tail” . The pics I showed I didnt do the triangle piece, just glassed the deck over. This ican also be clear. If you want your 2" border just mark out where you want it and glass up the triangle piece the color you are doing bottom. Make sure is sags down to cover area at crack and also goes passed tape line. You may have to add a small wedgie at deep crack to finish off possible open spots but if you cut the triangle good enough and make sure all spots are at least colored you wont have to worried about it. Hope that makes sense and helps

Bluefin- yeah, everything you pointed out - sounds fine! So the triangle goes on top to cover side laps, and do I want the small diaper wedgie to seal the inner crack? It’s difficult bcuz I don’t have my board on the stands…

I get what you mean…just make the triangle piece big enough to cover crack to tape line…I’ll precut piece beforehand k.

Well, I jotted down the notes of the tips you Folk’s left -so once I’m actually glassing it should be self explanatory. I think if the cracks covered, and there are no fugly gaps it should work.
