Hell at least they are trying something different. All I have seen in fin design is more variations of a fish’s dorsal fin. Same old stuff for 40 years. I think fin design is going to be the next breakthrough if only someone would step out of the box and go for it.
I was joking around back in the 70’s when I broke a fin off. I got some epoxy and glued a tallboy budweiser can on the board. Took it out and it actually worked great. Makes you think.
They do look interesting. Maybe the company should send a set to The semi official swaylocks research dept for testing. I can be re............ I mean THEY can be reached by contacting me
I don't see an easy release of water with that type of trailing edge. It seems to me that there will be a turbulent venturi created at the notch and therefore interrupting a SMOOTH flow or release of the water. Of course... I don't know squat.
surfing is too dynamic with too many tangibles/intangibles to tank test fin designs like a racing sailboat hull or airplane wing, so fin development will always remain subjective with more misses then hits… and often the ‘perfect’ set-up for one rider is a no go for another…
funny thing about testing fins - best to do so in perfect conditions, only who wants to waste time swapping fins or risk a perfect session…and fin experimentation in average surf provides average results…as interesting as these look, gonna try them for the first time on that perfect day you’ve been waiting on?
and then there is Camel from West Oz , who lost a fin at G-land, hand shaped a crude replacement from a piece of flotsam plywood, offset it towards the inside rail, and claimed it as best tube riding board ever…
I’ve tried a pair in my twin fin prone board because I didn’t want large fins anyway.
My first thought as soon as I actually saw them in person was “They are just too small”.
I had to grind down the tabs a few mm’s to get them to fit in the fcs plugs so the base of the fin was flush with the board.
There’s carbon in the centre but the outside is like plastic.
Took them for a paddle. Well they did allow easy paddling but there’s not a lot of area there either.
Riding waves I found they had very little hold and drive.
Took them out after a few waves as I was wholly unimpressed and put my cut down keels made from glass flex M7’s back in…much better.
What works even better though are a pair of the old blue Kelly Slater fins which I’ve heated up and put a small amount of inwards curve into the top third of the fin.
Nowhere near as radical as the Webbers available for a kings ransom from fcs.
Briefly tried to get some photos of them yesterday showing the angle but hard to do. I’ll put a straight edge on them and get a photo later.
Before putting the bend in them I’d tried the fins (Kelly’s) and discarded the fins just as quickly as the Sharks because they didn’t have the drive and hold I was looking for (remember I’m talking about on a prone board here).
Its just my feeling that many of these far-out fin designs(templates) are equivalent to a more staid and traditional fin design with roughly the same surface area that play off the balances of base/depth/rake.
But kids are attracted to them…
Emergency room doctors would definetly not be thrilled.
Im about to release my new fins. Pintfins.com.au. Fins that are shaped like pint glasses. Even come in amber, dark and stout colour. I do have some pro's using them, but like reefshark, i need to keep the names quiet, for fear of upsetting the likes of Ripaquikbong. They surf like normal fins, but leave a trail of head in the wave. Pretty cool huh?
Hahah, i like playing around with fins too, so i shouldn't mock!
