Anyone have some good suggestions for cutting away the stringer to make way for a fin-box. I am finding myself using clumsy round tools (ie. Dremmel) to dig it out. So it is tough to get a smooth depth all the way through. Thanks for any and all responses. Jeff
A 3/4" SHARP ON ONE SIDE CHISEL WILL GET IT EYE BALL CLOSE SINCE YOU AREN’T USING A ROUTER!!!
For a stringer, a chisel probably works better. But uneven foam is your friend. I use a hobby tool to channel grooves on either side of the stringer where possible, reaching 1/2" fore and aft of the box. Install the box before glassing if possible. Glassing over the box in makes it tight. If you’re adding the box after glassing channel a groove around the box hole, under the glass. When you install the box, squeeze your filler/glue into all the channels. It’ll hold alot tighter.
Noodle - What’s your technique for glassing over the fin box so that the glass comes up to the edge of the opening? Thanks, Gary
