Do i do this before skinning blank or after ? Aloha ,Cal
CAl, I like to do all my rough out on the raw blank. True and skin deck, skin bottom down to thickness, rocker nose and tail, add V, concaves, then draw on outline and cut out. With the added width of the raw blank, doing all this first, results in the board being truer when it is finally cut out. Also, the outline is easier to clean up with out the crust of the blank extending to the rail line and the blank is thinner, with less foam to be kept in line.
Thanks jim … yeah that makes alot of sense . You learn something new everyday i appreciate your help bud . Aloha & mahalo , Cal
I do it the same way as Jim (after all he did teach me many years ago).Sometimes on short boards I will leave the deck unskinned because they are just about pre shaped right out of the mold. Most of my boards are long or hybrids and the best thing I picked up from Jim was crowning the deck before cutting it out.I used to just skin the deck, but putting that first initial rail band on makes cleaning up the outline a lot easier.Thats what I like about this site…no matter how old one is or how many boards you have built you can always learn.I read all of the posts, sometimes even the beginners come up with something off the wall that actually works.
