cutting templates

How do you guys cut your templates? I use doorskins or masonite cut with a saw and the true it up with a hand planer and sanding block. this method is time consuming and tedious, is there an easier way?

it doesn’t take too long, what’s the rush for a good template.

You want to use your planer to true up your templates after you cut them out. Just as you should be doing to true up your outlines. aloha,tw

I use 1/8" doorskins…Cut with a SHARP utility knife…Fast and easy… http://www.hollowsurfboards.com

jason, i use thin plastic, i think its called acetate. you can cut it with a razor blade and tru it up with sanding blocks. its flexible and light so you can travel with it too! i buy one sheet for around $12aud and can generally get 3 double sided half templates. you can also buy it in a roll of 50m and make full length temps. i just made copys of all mine this year as i have been handshaping some custom orders in indo and japan and the plastic is nice and easy to travel with and has no customs probs like wood products. i have heard of some guys using very thin clear perspex too but havent ventured to look for the material. http://www.feraldave.com

sentra is another good plastic sheet to use…

where can i get acetate and that other stuff from?

any plastics supplier will point you in the right direction, i get mine from coastal plastics, tweed heads, actually quite close to where kr spent many years working. http://www.feraldave.com

thanks guys

PVC works well. 2 mil thickness I like. Also comes on 10’ length. You can get it in white which makes lines easy to see and you can cut it with sizzors. You get it from sign supply companies.
