Ok, so I’ve dinged on of my board again. Not a a big deal, except I didn’t really notice untill the stringer started to stick up on the deck. Now it sticks up about 1/4". Kind of hard on my chest when paddling… Turns out there was a small crack in the nose and the stringer have soaked some water and the wood expanded. It’s happened before, I fixed it on the bottom last time by sanding away the bump and reglassing. Guess that reinforced the bottom enough to make the deck be the victim this time. But I really don’t feel like doing the same on the deck as I’m quite happy with the resin swirl on the deck. Any suggestion? I’d like to get all of that ¤"!#/&"!%¤ wood out of that board.
You could cut the glass on both sides of the stringer on the bottom again. The deck glass would probably want to go back to flat and the stringer, with the relief of the cuts, might migrate the swelling away from the deck pressure. Also open up the ends, water travels in wood along the grain. More crosscut grain is probably exposed along the bottom anyway, because of rocker crossing through decreasing thickness, so opening the bottom would dry it out better than opening the deck…
Huh, the stringer is that much higher than the deck? I’ve had, and seen, boards where the foam shrunk away from the stringer, but haven’t seen any of this for years.
About all I can suggest is to grind it down and glass/patch the strip again. Oh, and patch a little sooner next time. This didn’t happen overnight.
