I got my first damaged blank shipment. No big deal, Clark Foam was great about crediting the blank cost to my next order. I’m going to shape something out of it but no matter what outline I could come up with I’ll have to deal with two big holes in the bottom 1/3 of the blank. My thought is to ignore the damaged areas (1x4x2 and 1x2x2), shape as normal and fill them when I get to the fine sanding stage. Planning on an opaque lam to cover any fill material. How should I fill such large deep holes? Q-cell/resin for the bulk of the cavity with a thin layer of sugar/resin on top to make it easy to blend and fine sand? What do you think? Tom S.
Tom, I think your method would work fine. Sometimes I square up the hole as best as I can and shape a scrap piece of foam to fit before filling. Often I don’t need filler. Patrick
Thanks Patrick. The larger of the two holes is going to be partially visible once I skin and shape the deck and rails, a foam block might be in order there. I think I’ll wait until I’m at the fine sanding stage and see what works out best. Might be a good reason to do an all opaque glass job. TS > Tom, I think your method would work fine. Tom!..just came across this…If you go the q-cell/resin combo, go WAY heavy on the q-cell end of the proportion (but I’m sure that you already knew this)…otherwise the texture/consistency of the sanding surfaces will be incompatible, and you will be sanding, sanding, and cursing (mostly!). For substantial gouges or air bubbles, I’ve taken to one of the tips offered on this site (and have had good results {thanks, again, whoever you were})…the lightweight spackling route (DAP brand). The stuff sands well, is light, and the integrity of the shaped “shell” seems to hold up well to pressure. with an opaque job on top of that, you should have no problem. (p.s. I apply with a cheap plastic squeegee (the kind you get in a pack for about 2 bucks. I round the edges with a “cut-everything” pair of scissors). Aloha…Tommy V.
Tom, Can you get casting foam?Like to make your own blanks. This is the best stuff to use. It’s a bit pricey.Herb

For the spackle idea… Thank Henry Fry of Fry Surfboards, Pasadena TX. He gave it to me. I don’t know if he thought it up, but lightweight spackle is the ultimate in foam filler… in my book. Thanks, Henry. http://www.frysurfboards.com
