Damaged Rail

Had a bit of a collision and this was the result.  As you can see, there is quite a chunk of foam missing.  I was hoping you guys could give me some pointers on how to fix this.  Thanks a bunch.

hey foxsa

welcome to sways

you will need to replace the foam then glass over it

do a search, you will find lots of info on this subject

…hello,

you need to fill the hole so

you have 2 options:

1-with a paste

2-with foam

1-is the normal way if the repair is not too big

.flush with water let dry; then use a hairdryer.

.put your hands around the ding so not too much light on it and close inspection for Brown areas and Grey areas; normally if the ding had more surf on it.

.grab a Grey/White or Yellow (the grit not the back paper color) sandpaper and sand a bit the edges, get rid of fiber strings, etc

.mix: lam resin (the clear one) + aerosil (cabosil) + a really bit of White pigment (sometimes is better White tint) check the Whitness of you board and compare with your mix; so really really a bit of pigment; put MEKP not too much, less if you have warm weather there, if not Brown coloration can occur.

how much of the charge (aerosil)? to resist gravity.

.apply the mix, if for some reason the mix start to falling from the board, you still can add more charge or put masking tape forming a “capsule” bigger than the hole.

.let dry and cure for 2 hours or less (less even if you used UV catalized resin + Mkep)

.sand with electrical sander (80 grit) or drill or with a block with 36 grit. Then sand, be careful, around the repair, 1 or 2 inches, depend on the condition of the surface, cracks, etc. sand through the sheet of fiberglass (you sand the gloss or final coat, the hot coat and then the fiber layers) go easy with the tools (if you ll use the block, now dont use anymore the 36 grit, put a 60 grit) less than 1mm thickness to sand.

.cut 2 or 3 sheets of 4oz fiber glass cloth. Use enough to cover everything

.lam with lam resin + a tiny bit of White tint or with lam resin+ UV cat + White tint (to unify everything). You can use tape to keep the fiberglass on place. Check to avoid bubbles, etc.

.let dry and cure 1 or 2 hours; 5 mins under the Sun or Black lights if you used UV cat.

.apply Hot coat (lam resin + styrene with wax)

.cure exactly as mentioned with lam resin.

.sand, flush everything

.apply final coat

.sand with lesser grits (220 - 400)

.apply rubbing compound and polish a bit with your hands

-if you have a gloss mirror finish it will be a bit different (more grits, polish by machine, etc)

2-the foam option:

.sand 1 or 2 inches around the hole, the same way previously mentioned.

Then use a jigsaw or like that and cut a perfectly good square (make the hole square)

cut a foam in that size and form; check, etc

apply lam resin + the mix as in the other method, in the sides of the hole and a smear on the cutted foam; put in place, try to clean the paste around the edges and on the foam.

Let cure, then lam and finish as the other method.

Especially on damage this large, you always want to try and duplicate what the original construction was.  On rail damage such as this,  a “V” cut is made in the rail, and then a wedge of foam is forced in with glue (clear Gorilla glue works best).  Clamp or tape the wedge until the glue is dry.  Shape the foam to the original contours and glass over it.

PeteC, I’ve never seen clear g. glue. Is it new? I know they have a white formula.

Home Depot, same price as white.  Been available for a few years now.  I use this for broken boards, and also to glue new foam (poly) in damaged eps.

Good to know, Thanks Pete. I normally stay away from home depot but this may mean a trip if I can’t find it elsewhere. Thanks again.
