Dark Laps

I free lapped a board using saline glass and silmar resin and my lap on the deck is darker than the rest of the board. Why? I would have cutlapped but I expected it to be clear but now it’s just ugly. As always, thank you.

What brand of glass?

have you lam’d the deck yet? it will naturally look different next to the foam. did you sand the lap? sometimes when you sand too much the resin will smear causing a discolorazation…

I had only a couple of spots to sand and I’ve done the deck. It’s 6oz E glass but I don’t know what brand. Got it from Surf Source in Jacksonville.

Sounds to me like a dark fabric. Some are clearer than others. Aerialite is very clear. JPS fabrics are good as well. Usually S-glass is excellent. Many companies sell different quality to surfboard manufacturers. A better quality that costs more. I don’t know what those guys are selling but there are some junk fabrics out there that are cheap.

Surfsource usually sell JPS. Never have gotten a bad roll from them. What kind of sand paper did you use on the laps. Sometimes cheap paper leaves dark residue.

No, it was visibly darker before sanding.

what type of cloth does fiberglass fa sell? hexcel, jps? are they the company names?

Is there ANY possiblity you got Volan cloth by mistake?

Fiberglas Fl. sells JPS and Hexel Shwebal (sorry, sp.) They could have sold you some second material too. Not that any company would do that…

what is the difference between hexcel and jps? cost, strength, whiteness??

No, I guess not. They don’t sell Volan. It’s just the top lap botttom to deck. Top to bottom turned out fine…wasssssup?

Occassionally SLIM i’ll buy specialty fabrics like S-glass or finer weave cloths by CUT LENTGH, rather than off a brand new roll i’ve bought and opened myself. In this case i’ve found if the cloth was cut on a dirty table in a warehouse that operates a forklift truck, then obviously the dust and exhaust smoke settles all over the place and becomes almost invisible.Once the cloth is rolled out and cut the dust on fingers etc. impregnates the cloth and is only visible when wet-out ! Unfortunatly the edges are often worst from where the worker (with grubby fingers!) draws the fabric out.So once you lap the cloth it is out of sight till cured and then you flip it over and …“S**T” is heard for miles around !!!
