de-humidifier

its quite damp in my glassing room and ive been told that this will also help me get the temp up in the room?

does anyone use one?

does it have an affect on the resin?

thanks

I use a dehumidifier in my bench room (finishing room). Not for heating, but to keep reletive humidity level lower and constant. The pro glassers here on Swaylocks may provide some expert advice for you, but I have found much better success when using casting resin on my wood fins when the work is done in lower humidity.

Depends a bit on which resin you’re using.

I never had much trouble with pe, but I know epoxy should be used in low humidity. The hardener absorbs moisture and won’t cure correctly.

Hi Paul

Yup the joys of glassing in the UK. I use a small heater fan it cost me about £35. I also find that homeblown’s resin works best for our conditions in winter, it is also clearer than the resin from Seabase. If you need it in Ireland contact Steph at home blown. Here are their details. http://www.homeblown.co.uk/ I will be in Bundoran or Esky this weekend comming so if your close by let me know

Keep well

im using seabase resin iso 7x

swifty im based in limerick about 3hrs south so not too near :o(

so does that mean when I glass with epoxy the water that forms on it is a bad thing, caused by a too humid room?

Water beading up on your brand new coat of epoxy is bad. Pick up a dehumidifier and enjoy how much warmer the room feels at a lower humidity. Too bad this thread reminded me that I forgot to use mine for that last board. Figured the little space heater would work, but it was too small and didn’t affect the humidity.

Hi Pauluk

I just glassed a board on Sunday. I only used the heater while I was working then switched it off as it was late(didn’t want the shed to burn down). Yesterday morning the board was dry. Had it been Seabase resin it would have still been wet. Seabase resin I find is OK in summer but in winter is a bitch. Only problem with homeblown resins it kicks really quickly in summer so use 1% per volume in summer in winter you can use 1.5%. What I did last year winter was keep the resin in side till you use it and start heating up the area about 2 hour before you start to glass. If its a fan heater remember to turn it away from the board while you are working on it ( I Learnt the hard way on this one).

its a shame i cant get homeblown stuff in ireland as it is too expensive to ship over there is a depot for seabase here so im stuck with that though i can usually get my resin to go off in around 2hrs. 1x convection heater and a oil heater does the trick plus i use 2 metal storage containers as my sheds so it gets real hot in there!!

but it does get very humid so i think a trip to argos is in store.

what you in bundoran for? r is it just a quick surf trip?

Hi Pauluk

I am visiting a friend in Dublin so instead of sticking around there we normally head over to Bundoran for a bit of surf. I am not too sure what the surf is going to look like. The wind looks very North. Which way does the peak face. Swell looks like there will be a bit. Otherwise he will just Kite surf and I will surf the beach break(cant remember the name but the one that makes a wedge off the cliff) and have a go with his kite. So it will just be a quick 3 days in Ireland and 2 Days on the west coast.

Keep well
