Decal printing

Could anyone out there advise me on printing logo decals? I have previously used a computer printer but the colours were too pale. I’m presuming professional decals are screen printed onto decal paper but how does this affect resin adhesion? Also, which inks are suitable too avoid bleeding? Any info greatly appreciated. Regards, Neil

Hi’ya, to put your mind at rest decal printing is nice and easy just tape to your nomal copier paper and run it through your inkjet. As for the bleeding it better to do a test colour run (all colours) and laminate it on to scrap foam or even a piece of wood to see what runs and what stays put. Good luck, Dal

Hi Guys What paper do you guys use. If was to ask an Art shop to order it for me what should I ask for. Cheers

rice paper

Do you get various thicknesses of rice paper because the one I use I need to paint a bit of reson onto the blank, stick it down and then glass over it. If there is only one thickness then do you have any tips. Thanks

there is something cald tisue paper that works. it’s almost the same as rice paper but maybe cheaper. don’t know. the ink you should use is cald printers ink. god luck. Johan

you have pretty much got the idea of how to put your decal on, just run the squeegee lightly over the paper to take away excess resin then lay your cloth over and begin lamination. As for thickness of rice paper they maybe different grades but I get mine from seabase in newquay (uk). If you go into your nearest surf shop they would probably sell you a few sheets

Neil…have heard many praise the epson “durabrite” inks for color and lightfastness. In addition, if you coat the back (within your outline image) with acrylic opaque white, the colors will be more saturated and will “pop” (visually, that is…that’s a GOOD thing). silkscreens run into bucks for multiple color seperations (more than one color [an individual screen has to be made for each color]= more $). Still…check around. some silkscreen houses can be pretty reasonable. Some production people dig knowing that their product may actually be utilized on a surfboard…and might cut you a break. T. (by the way, when I said opaque the back of your image with white…that’s AFTER you’ve printed it. …O.K.?!).

I used a toilet seat cover (“El Protecto”) - they are usually available for free in public rest rooms. If your logo isn’t too big, just cut out a section, tape it to regular paper and run it through your printer. I ran a regular piece of paper through first to see where it would print on the sheet, then taped the seat cover paper over that spot. The first one wrinkled but the next two worked good. (See resource #657)

Great. One more thing to do at work. Go to bathroom, sneak up to color laser printer, print laminate. Wonderful. Thank you John (no pun really), Rob Olliges

Howzit Grant, I use a lot of computer generated laminates that I make. A few glassers who also use my lams said the paper was showing on dark coloed boards. The problem was they weren’t laying down enough resin under the lam. Some rice paper soaks up more resin then others, since I don’t squeegee the lam til I’m laying up the glass I don’t have that problem. Aloha, Kokua

Howzit Dal, I find that Yellow seems to bleed so I spray the lam with clear acrylic (both sides just to be safe) and let it dry real good. No bleeding!Aloha, Kokua

dal i was using seabase though at £1.50 a sheet was very expensive! i found a big art shop and picked up a 12metre roll of rice paper for £8! its a bit thicker but easier to print on!

Toilet covers!!! whoo, proffessional! Anyway, yeah but I still want opaque whites in my computer prinout decals… It can’t be done? http://www.speedneedle.com.au

I tried the toilet seat cover but the brown ran! Looks like shit!

Howzit Josh, Paint the back of the lam with water based white acrylic paint, but the trick is to thin the paint with acrylic paint thinner instead of water, I usually do 2 thin coats. The real trick is you have to cut out the lam so no white shows outside of the lam. I had some pics of a board with yellow stars on a blue board that I did. But alas when I went to down load to my computer I accidently erased them. But the white paint will give you what you want. Aloha, Kokua

Neil, First off what area are you in, I can print lams fairly cheap for you, if not Find a good screen supply store and buy as many screens as colors you want, get the 18X22 or a bit bigger, then Vinyl ink in the colors of your choice plus white. get a film done from any screenprinter you can do the color seperations easy if you have photoshop and Use Options to make registration marks. Blah Blah Blah Yadda yadda I just realized this is way to difficult to explain if anyones really intersted or neads help email me and ill get ya taken care of es http://paradoxdistribution.com
