Deck glass layering?

Does it make a difference which weight of fiberglass I put on top and which I put on the bottom on the deck? For instance, I’m doing a 6/4 deck. 6 on top or 4 on top?

Thanks!

Assuming you’re not wrapping both layers around the rails…

4 oz cut to profile with 6 oz cut large & wrapped over the rails will give more rail protection & stiffness.

6 oz cut to profile & 4 oz cut large & wrapped will give slightly lower weight, clearer free laps, and a little more flex.

Perfect! Thanks!

So then it doesn’t matter the order? I guess it would be easier to do the layer you want on the rails first? That way when you glass the top patch you have somewhere to squeegee the resin to other than dry rails.

The patch panel be it 4oz or 6oz goes on first followed by the top layer which then gets wrapped round the rails.

You lay on both pieces at once & pour resin once. The resin ‘from the panel’ is the same as the resin on the whole lam.

And you do the smaller piece first because then the rail lapping piece covers up the strings you’d get if you had the smaller one on top.
