deck patch

When laminating the top of a board with say 6oz and 4oz deck patch do you place the deck patch down first then the 6oz cover and laminate all at once? Does anyone laminate the deck patch first then the cover? Do any of you rap the deck patch and the cover around the rails, if not how big of a deck patch is used…

Tuna: ----How many boards did you let slide through the gate for free yesterday? When I do deck patches, or any reinforcing type extra layers for the that matter, they go down under the full length layer. I don’t wrap the patch with the lap, just cut it to the rail line. The main thing I’m trying to avoid is the discoloration of multiple layers on a clear board and how I’m going to finish the edges that appear in the middle of the deck or on the rails. If the patch is under the top layer I’ve had better luck using the hotcoat to feather this edge in. If you patch on top you tend to have more trouble with burn through on the cloth weave while sanding the edge down. How do others here prefer to do this? I’m just learning by the seat of my pants on this stuff. Herb would tell you (maybe) that if you are going with a 4 / 6 top layer that you are better off using the 6 oz as the patch and the 4 oz on top of that. When it kicks the 4 oz weave will require less to hotcoat to fill (cover) compared to the deeper 6 oz weave pattern. I always do my patch under the top layer that I lap to the bottom. I cut my patches so the edge falls in the middle of the rail (so that the top, deck side of the rail is covered).
