deck tha' hauls

Is the deck important? Does it have design features that “complete” the board?

There’s so much talk about rails, rocker, fins, flex, etc. When you design/shape your board do you put much thought into the deck, and if so, mind sharing those thoughts?

I have some input here,

decks are a personal preferance some like them dome’d and some flat

but also they have to be blended to the rails from the center thickness of the board

Thats all I got

Good question. Flat is phat!

If a persons design view is the whole board as a foil, then the deck shape is just as important as any other part of design.

The deck balances the foil and volume around the desired rocker, bottom shape, fin set-up, rail shape and outline shape.

It is the deck which gives you the thickness distribution, both lengthways and width ways.

It’s the deck taper, dome, roll, whatever you want to call it, which governs the volume in the rails, from nose to tail.

Ever wondered why some special boards look good and go good? Someone got the foil right, and the deck is an important part.

I was talking about this very thing last night with a guy I am shaping a longboard for. He opened his eyes real wide as I explained the whole dynamic, how when its tied together right, it just looks ‘right’.

Foil wasn’t something he was familiar with but when he was able to see the whole picture, it helped him to understand how everything is tied together, hopefully seamlessly.

Now, if I could do one decent glass job…back to the sander…

Actually I only hinted at it but you brought it into the light.

The concept of rocker foil was what was behind the “6 elements” thread.

Im a sculptor. My boards are an excursion in form and beauty (to me:-)

Last week I had the privilege of discussing board design theory with a young shaper. He was explaining rocker foil and it was as if a whole new world opened up to me. My next board will be my first. Then the next one after that will be my first again, and again. Im feeling “stoke”
