Design questions

Hello everyone.

I’m just finishing up a Fish I’ve made waiting to get a nice big block of EPS, and had a couple of questions.

The first attachment is a pair of Fins I shaped; many thanks to ChipFish for the templates posted here. The measurements of them are a bit off from what Chipfish had.(67/8"B x 5"D) I used his pics to make an outline with Illustrator, but when I printed them out, for some reason it was re-scaled. …? I have ended up with a fin that is 61/4" B x 43/4" D. Is this a decent size fin for my board? It is 6’7" x 20" x 23/4", and I will be riding it in the North East US mostly. (smaller mushy to 4-6 ft. pitchy swell) I am 6’5" tall and 170lbs.

The other attachment is a Fish I am designing for a friend of mine. He is 6’ tall 180 lbs. He will be riding it in the NorEast when it gets a little bigger, again 4-6 foot pitchy swell. I think for the most part the design looks good, but the tail is a fair bit wider than the nose. 17" T x 14 15/16" N . Is this TOO wide a tail, or too big a difference between the two? At 6’4" long, I may also try re-doing it at something a little longer , say 6’6"?

Any intput is greatly appreciated.

I will attach both the .brd file for those with the APS3000 app, and a .pdf print out of the board specs.

If anyone wants to see some more shots of the board that I’m finishing now check out>

Damn! I lost the pic of the fins. Pressed the ‘inline’ button thinking it would load up with the page.

Here it is.

Peace

If dimensions were reversed, it’d be big enough. As is, you need to add some area for your leverage.

A 17" tail works fine, if the surfer can remember to stand on the inside of the board or has huge feet. Needs even more fin, of course.

Heavier boards, or boards with soft rails, can use smaller fins. Hard edged tails on boards need lotsa fin.

well i dunno why people are riding whales of fishes he could probably get away with a 5 10 fish with about a 14-15 nose and a 16-17 tail, if you then pull the tips of the buttcrack into 9.5-10 in inches put the wide point slightly forward and make the board about 21 inches wide leave the board on the thicker side he shouldn’t have a problem paddling or floating on it. my friend who is about 140 had a zippi 5 10 fish that paddle almost as well as a long board. i made a 5 0 fish and it paddles fine. i just ran some numbers on aps3000 and the board with characteristics similar to what i have said would have 35liters or volume

g’day Johan !

firstly , thanks for using my templates …I hope people get to try out LOTS of the templates on those threads , and let us know how they go !

Unfortunately I couldn’t ‘open’ the photos of the board , but from the dimensions you’ve given , it “may” need deeper fins . That’s a LONG “fish” , and a wide tail . [I tend to go with the opposite , a wider nose and a similar or narrower with tail …but that’s just me , for my waves here]

Can you install twin fin boxes or plugs in it , so the guy can play around with different size and shape fins for different conditions ?

A fin with a 6" base and even nearly a 6" depth ‘could’ be fun to try in the surf you mentioned …[ I think I posted some of those in the “twin fin templates” thread , perhaps ?]

cheers mate !

Johan…your 17" tail will work, but, in the waves you describe it will probably be difficult to handle the speed…

Mc Coy however, does the same kinda thing on his boards … very wide tails… and uses soft edges to compensate alll the way to the tail…Never ridden one myself but horan seems to think they’re good…

or , as Curren said [in I think it was “beyond the boundaries”]

“in hollow waves , the wider tail will tend to get sucked up the face in the tube …”

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. With all the different comments, I am getting a better idea of how some of the design characteristics play out in the water.

For my friends board, I will probably do some more tweaking in the APS3000 software to come up with something more balanced. Though if I can afford the materials I might try playing around with some of the different designs just to see how they work in different conditions; experiment a little. I’ll see.

Thanks again for the Fin templates Chip, it’ll be fun to try out more of them. I am going to put twin boxes in my friends board, and maybe make a couple of sets for him so he has more options.

I have some Futures in the shop already but I founda link on here to LokBox in Hawaii. They seem good, what with all the adjustment possibilities. Has anyone tried them here?

BTW I’m not sure why some of those attachments didn’t get recognised. One was a .brd file which I have seen uploaded here before and the other was a .pdf . They can still be opened with the proper app, but you’ll have to choose it. Anyone else have similar problems? I’m using MacOsX 10.4 with Safari. Don’t you just love trying to figure out computer quirks?

Peace

“YAHOOOOOOOOO !!”

…I LOVE hearing that , thanks mate !

The hours spent templating , cutting cardboard , scanning , resizing , increasing contrast …all worth it , when I hear at least a COUPLE of people are willing to try out stuff , and [hopefully] provide feedback how they went !

cheers Johan !
