My wife bought me a bosch cordless detail sander for christmas...just used it for the first time to clean up around the rail edge on a wing...absolutely amazing - real light to use best tool I've ever used for those fiddly little bits...cordless as well...definately recommend for those who've never used one!
Howzit thirdshade, Never seen 1 of those But that's how it is living on an island in the middle of the ocean. Some tools I like to have cords and sanders are in that bracket, think I might try the Dremel multitool. Aloha,Kokua
For what it's worth, the Fein patents on their detail sander ran out, so there's others on the market now like the Rockwell ( no relation to the old Rockwell/Delta or Rockwell/ Porter Cable tools though) that are a lot cheaper than the Feins used to be. And then there's the $39.95 Harbor Freight version.
I say 'used to be' for a reason, 'cos the price on the standard (not the quick-change variety) Fein multimaster variable speed has come down considerably now that they no longer have the market to themselves. Having read a few reviews on the Rockwell detail sander that called it 'homeowner grade', I spent a few extra bucks and got the Fein. And with all the range of blades and cutters and such that are made for the Feins that don't fit the other brands, it made sense to go with one.
I have a Fein (with the quick release) and I really like it. Dunno about board building (other than for detail sanding or maybe cutting in fin boxes-which case a router will do way easier), but for oddball work it is great. I am an electrician, so I use it for cut-in boxes in plaster, tough flush cut stuff, etc. You might not need it often, but when you need it, you really need it. You can find good aftermarket replacement blades on the net, too, so the days of getting gouged on those is pretty much over. My .02.
I picked up the Rockwell Sonicrafter about a year and a half ago. As far as surfboard construction is concerned, they are great for trimming down FCS plugs and center fin boxes. It makes for a lot less sanding with a rotary sander after. However, these tools do generate a lot of heat, so be aware.
Howzit casapobre,I wasn't buying one for surfboard work but for construction work, the cutting blade works great for cutting door trim when doing wood floors. I do some furniture sanding and that is where they come in really handy. I am glad to hear about the patent thing and that explains why all of the sudden there are so many on the market. Aloha,Kokua
First off, it occurs to me that some of the cute little blades that the Feins and similar have might be the cat's posterior for removing old fin boxes. Compared to a router, they'd be controllable, reasonably quick and no worries about your router jig breaking loose and making a new and different - real different- channel bottom setup.
Along with the scraper blade and, naturally, the sander pads.
Now, I bought mine for work, carpentry and boat work, plus refurbishing some 20-odd 9/6 double-hung windows here that are in need of new putty and new paint. Along with the shutters, the doors, trimming door trim where the floor level goes up after I put in tile floors in both bathrooms and the kitchen. Jeez - here I thought that maybe I was being a little overly self-indulgent buying the thing, but now that I think of it.....
I'm curious, though - aftermarket blades and such that'll work with the Fein? Maybe a few that Fein doesn't make? Any brands to look for and any particular goodies that do an extra-nice job?
