deviation or deviant????

Im gonna be shaping a one man outrigger (OC1). Y’all think it’d be appropriate, or of interest, to document here on Sways? Moderators?

For those who arent familiar with the sport, check out these sites.

I’d be very interested to see what is involved in such a project. Looking forward to it.

I always wanted to try one those, can’t wait to see your build thread.

Do it!

I would love it. I really want one but they are kinda pricey

I can’t speak for Mike but I’d support it, (they are surf riding vehicles, after all) and would look forward to seeing your posts.

Not to mention your M.O. of posting good photos! Please do. TaylorO

It’s often this kind of stuff that inspires or flicks the spark that ignites our imaginations…

More of this than “should I make a 6’1” or 6’3"…???.."

What are you waiting for…???..Bring it on…

I remember an article in the Journal years ago about an Eastern European guy, living on O’ahu, who built composite racing canoes.

Hey epac. That was/is Karel Tresnak (http://www.outriggerconnection.com/). I built in his Kauai shop years ago. I had my own shop, in Costa Mesa, buiding the molded OC1’s and molded paddleboards for he and Walter Guild and Joe Bark. This will actually be a handshaped canoe. I am working on the templates and will be cutting foam (eps) this month. At 21 feet it will be a challenge, but its the foot wells that keep me awake at night.

As long as the moderators are cool with it Im stoked to share and hopefully inspire.

I hope they cut you loose with this thread. Thanks for the link on Karel. Unbelievable work!

Learning to tame the big ocean can take years, and consequently many of the best solo racers are in their thirties and forties. But one of the sport’s emerging stars is Karel Tresnak Jr., whose boatbuilder father produces some 200 to 250 high-tech one-man racing canoes a year. For the past two years,Tresnak has been enduring a special weekly training regimen involving 18 hours of paddling, weight lifting, cross-training, and heart-rate and lactate-threshold monitoring designed by his father, who was an Olympic whitewater slalom canoeist for Czechoslovakia in the 1970s. Last summer Karel Jr. won the Molokai in four hours and 17 minutes, a full seven minutes ahead of Mark Rigg, his closest competitor, who was reduced to vomiting over the side of his craft. In some ways, Tresnak’s trajectory into the limelight seems to mirror that of the sport itself. "We all looked at Karel and wondered how this skinny little kid was hanging in there

With me, I make it 3 mods saying yes, go for it, I’m really interested too…

Right on, I say its classed a surf craft so go ahead, I’m excited about seeing this type of build.

I’ll take that as a blessing. Thank you.

I started a 12’ hawaiian style one man canoe from EPS several years ago. The hull is about 95% shaped, but it’s been sitting in my back yard waiting to be finished for over a year now.

Here’s a shot of the day I started gluing the pieces of foam together. I really hope to finish it this year.

A friend of mine said he’d help me make a mold if it comes out good.

There’s a guy who surfs a one man at PV Cove. Looks like a load of fun- he leans way back to keep it from pearling and sometimes it looks like he leans over to get the ama out of the water.

If it surfs, and oc-1 's definitely surf, it’s at home here at Sways…

I can understand that - however, there’s a gent who might be able to help you with that:

The knee wells above are not all that different from the foot wells you’d need to do, so perhaps what worked for the one would do nicely for the other?

Looking forward to seeing this one…

doc…

The Molokai solo outrigger race is this sunday. If conditions are as expected there will be some fantastic open ocean surfing. There will be a live feed here:
