Did the Jim Phillips that posts on here make Daily Joy surfboards?

I have one. I’m guessing about circa ‘73-’74. Brown inlay on the deck. Psychedelic swirl on the bottom. Diamond tail. About 6’9” I believe (haven’t put a tape on it yet). Says, “Limited edition surfboards by James Phillips and Robert Slamon.” Condition is a little rough, but not that bad. I’m getting ready to restore the thing. Same guy?

That logo, “Daily Joy”, was it a spin off of “Pure Joy”? My brother’s first board was a “Pure Joy”. (SteveA) The name was from some mixed citrus I was eating one morning,“daily Sun”. I had a thought, what was surfing to me, but a daily joy, so that was the name of my boards for many years. I’d had a partner/financier in Rhode Island that over night wanted to be a jewler/bike shop rather than a surf shop. He had a conciderible bill owed to Clark foam and decided he wasn’t going to pay it. I moved to Fla. and opened up Daily Joy, not wanting to shoulder his bills to Clark. The lable slowly morphed to Jim Phillips Daily Joy and eventually to just Jim Phillips. I have contacted Jimmy Phillips up in Santa Cruz to redo my Daily joy with the look of the Cow Palace poster art of the era, you know how the summer of love/retro look is bitchin’, so one day I will reserect Ole’ Daily Joy. That board was most likely done in 75’-76’ at my factory on Manatee Lane in Cocoa Beach, it had formerly been Claude Codgen’s Sun Shine factory. What a bunch of hippies we were!!!

Those were the first boards I built in Ft. Lauderdale (yuk) and Indialantic, Fla. Rob was my partner, but had such a serious drinking problem that the problem of simply going to work was too much for him. I have one daily joy in my quiver, a 7’4" daimond tail balsa board, I have bought it back 3 times from previous owners.

After I’m done with it I’ll post a picture for you. Shouldn’t be more than a few days now that I have most of the materials. All I need to do is find some resin resistant masking tape. The sad thing is I may have to drive to freaking Santa Barbara to get some. Does ANYONE carry tape in Ventura?

…Is there a auto-paint supplier in your area?He’d have it.Herb

what`s so sad about having to visit “freaking Santa Barbara”?

Thanks Herb. I just talked to the shaper next door who told me the same thing. I’d been across the street at the lumber yard. Duhhh. And I have nothing against Santa Barbara. I’d just rather not have to drive there expressly for the sole purpose of buying a role of tape. (I know Fiberglass Hawaii has the stuff) Seems like a waste.

too many gate guards keeping us commoners from surfing. I wish you ranchlanders would leave the beach to the plovers and execute the caddilacs and range rovers

All the people who are holding on way too tight because they’re “from” Santa Barbara. They’re as real as good surf at Ledbetter.
