Have a 12’ 3" blank and am going to try to make a tandem board. Pondering what the dimensions should be for a tandem board, with combined rider weight of about 320 lbs. Nothing of too much help in the archives (although there are a few pointers there) and summer’s coming up fast. I’m thinking 12’ even, not too wide (22") fairly pulled in but rounded nose w/ maybe a bit of concave, pretty thick (4") midsection foiled down to maybe 1 1/2" at nose & tail, and rounded pin tail with a big single fin (box)… but am still very open to suggestions, as this will only be the third board I’ve shaped. My wife & I don’t expect to ride this in anything too big, maybe shoulder-high reef break at the largest, or soft beach breaks. thanks in advance for any input. PS Bonta, if I don’t like the way it turns out as a tandem board, maybe you can use it to DOMINATE THE BOOKIES!! Until you get one from Costco…

Until you get one from Costco… I think you should upgrade to the 12’8", and boost the width upwards to 26". When the combined weight of 2 persons is put on a surfboard, it is greater than a single person of the same weight. A single surfer is supported by the bouyancy of the water that they lay in, but both persons are trying to be on the board where they normally wouldn’t be. I’ve shaped tandems and it’s suprising how little they want to float. The last one was 12’6", out of EPS , 26" wide and for 350-400 lbs. It didn’t float that well.

We’ve tandemed on (rental) 11 foot boards in Hawaii so I know the feeling of wanting more foam. But, I already bought the 12’ 3" blank so I guess I will just try to keep as much floatation in it as possible – and/or we’ll both go on a diet! Any advice on rocker or rails? I really appreciate any and all assistance!!! aloha.

Well Keith, I think you are already limited to the rocker that you have in the 12’3" and going for max volume limit’s you even more, but you aren’t shaping a floater, lip smacker either.

Very true. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll post a picture when it’s done and maybe next time I’ll start from the 12’ 8" blank.
