I lurk around here at times, but I always see someone asking or requesting dimensions. I’m surprised that there isn’t a data base of board types with dimensions to reference.
Rant:
Would this be a bad idea? Would all the chinese companies come out with new models based from Swaylock’s data base?
What is with the chinese ads on Swaylock’s…Money more important than ethics?

there is. it’s called the “resources” section.

chinese ads? i see no chinese ads that are swaylocks-sponsored. unless of course you’re talking about the google ads…which are automatically generated by google based on keywords used in the webpage…and definitely don’t have the swaylocks seal of approval. if you don’t like them, click that link at the bottom that says “keep swaylocks alive”…this place doesn’t pay for itself!!! those google ads help cover the expenses generated by all of us – even the lurkers like yourself. if you want to take care of the monthly expenses, i’m sure mike would be happy to remove the ads. “Money more important than ethics”…no.
Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction in resources. Didn’t realize the search engine could help ya navigate.

Know all about the googlebots financial power, but the irony of CHINESE SURFBOARD ADDS (stop screaming calm down) on swaylock’s is like someone screaming “SATAN ENTER ME!” During church service…To bad they can’t filter them out…

I believe that pbm-mako is referring to SwayBay ads such as the following:
If those are being “passed through” in some way from Google, I do not understand the mechanism. To be clear, I personally have no problem with these ads appearing on Swaylock’s, but I think that a claim that there are no “Chinese ads” here is not factual.
SwayBay is open to anyone and everyone willing to take the time to post an ad.
Swaylocks doesn’t charge a dime to post up an ad.
which begs the question…how does their presence have anything to do with either money or ethics?
are you suggesting that someone should go remove them just because the general consensus doesn’t like their content?
sounds like a first amendment violation to me.
Please read my post! I said I had no problem with those ads. How we got here: the original poster asked about Chinese ads. You claimed to be unaware of any, with the possible exception of Google pass-throughs. I merely pointed out that other Chinese ads do exist. By the way, First Amendment expression protection does not apply to a forum such as Swaylock’s, which is private property. Otherwise, exercise of most of the moderator functions would be a violation of same.
On a related topic, perhaps some way could be found for Swaylock’s to get revenue from companies (“Off-shore” or not) that are currently using SwayBay and other forum features for free adverts.
although i responded to your post, it should have been directed at the original poster with respect to his comment about money/ethics derived from ads. my apologies for the confusion.
certaininly, this is a private forum, and i won’t get into the legal affect therof. but, if you recall, the accusations originally made were that by allowing ads for mass-produced boards from china on Sways, that the site was ethically lacking. i was simply suggesting that to censor these ads specifically because they go against the grain of the swaylocks spirit would be a far greater ethical lapse. a comment based, just as the original comment, on ethics rather than of law…i simply used a legal principle with which everyone is familiar to draw reference.
and on another note, i don’t know if swaylocks gets a small piece of the SwayBay sales. but if they don’t, every successful sale should definitely result in a donation to the cause.
Even though it’s several years old, Dave Parmenter’s “Anatomy of a Surfboard” (click link) will most likely answer many of your questions. He covers many details on various surfboard designs.
Good point EP. Yes we are all guilty of copying or knock off’s of boards…Then tweeking the measurements in one way or another…In Addition, I would assume that everyone’s first board template are based on a board shaped by others in one fashion or another.
EP you nailed it pretty good…I have to say “UNCLE”
. Let’s say you are a lifelong shaper coming from the end of the old school era w/ about 10,000 boards under your belt. You have instinctive knowledge of surfboards, hydro and aerodynamic theories, and have applied all of these years into a small one man operation just to be able to ride out the lean, slow times in sales. Let’s include blank accounts w/ your own custom rocker indexes and some custom model scans for the machine. Now, in the post Clark era, you diversify into making your own EPS blanks (w/custom rockers and wood stringer combinations), all the while keeping tabs on who the appropriate glassing facilities are, and who has the time and quality to keep standards up to par. In the middle of all of this you have people calling for appointment times, conversations on how they like their boards and such. You have to keep all of this rolling w/ unnamed unbillable hours of driving your wares to and from all of these locations. Some of this high end glass work can run over $400.00 / unit. Couple that w/ buying enough blanks at a time to get your own rockers etc., cutting, glassing, delivery to your accounts in shops, and giving the shops enough credit to have the incentive to sell your boards in a timely manner. The reality of this is you can get about $150.0 / shape which will go towards rent on your shaping room and room to store the blanks you had to buy in quantity. This is only part of the equation.
The problem w/ going into shops and stealing this guy’s work is like dropping in on Gerry Lopez at the Pipeline. It’s more than disrespectful; it’s going to hurt in more ways than one. You can’t qualify a minimum wage surfshop employee letting a wantabe shaper w/ tape measure and tracing paper go at the products. Do the math, and do the right thing.
It sounds like you are trying to hard to sound like a lawyer (typed w/o sarcasm, but begging for it).
The real violation is you guys talking about dims, subtleties, and stealing shapers work, even before it is sold in the shops.
Ther is no harm in talking dimensions and what makes this board do this and that board do that. Almost all boards are based on something from the past. Hell, even car companies come out with simular autos. Fact is, two boards rough shaped by a machine and hand finished by two different people will be different. Not to mention totally hand shaped boards. I would say that it was totally unethical to computer scan someone elses work and have it computer shaped. But sharing general shapes and dims is like sharing waves. It’s just something we should all do. Otherwise, what’s the point of Swaylocks?

Yes, sharing is give and take. I believe in sharing. I also believe in Swaylocks, obviously, that is why I tried to interject a historic sense of passing down information (copying). The way of copying what is out there being surfed and taking what you might like from it is part of the short evolutionary time scale. My view is that it’s harmful in many ways to do so before it is sold(stealing). I know my hypothetical shaper friend would undoubtedly give help and guidance to those who asked. When you give, you get. When you take away w/o giving, it’s a much smaller system. My shaper friend might even ask you to sit in on your shape so you might gain some of that livelong knowledge, or maybe he might learn something from you (growing system). Good luck Punasurf.
