dims help for a new fish

hey all, I won a 6’2"A US Blanks blank at the Big Sur raffle. Thanks to US Blanks for the donation!!! Here’s a link to the blank catalog.

Any input would be appreciated. This will be board #10. Thanks!

I’m thinking a 6’2" quad something like what Toby, Manny or the Hynson are doing. Single or double bump, 6’2" x 20 1/2" x 2 3/8".

tip to tip at the butt crack 8"

??? Nose rocker 5 1/4’ tail rocker 2 1/2" ???

Researching the web a Hynson 6’2" would be N=14 3/4" T=16 1/4" at 20 1/4" wide

                        a Pavel  --->               N=14 1/2" T=16 1/4" at 21" wide

can’t really find dims on a Mandala

where to place the boxes? I’ll be using probox.

rail design? Falt deck, dome the deck?

start the wings at the base of each fin?

Hopefully I can take a look at some this weekend.

me?= fit, 50, 5’11" at 175 lbs. South OC to San Diego reefs, points and beach breaks.

Tim:

Your rocker proposal sounds a little extreme to me, more like a short board for pretty good waves. Granted, I’m from the east coast and would probably consider anything you surf to be epic, hehe.

I had a 6’0’’ pavel speeddialer. It had 4.5’’ of nose rocker and, I believe, 1 7/8 tail rocker or less. I also have a pavel superbank (5’8’‘) with 4.5’’ nose and 1 3/8’’ tail for more perspective. My 6’4’’ shortboard has 2 3/8’’ tail rocker.

So, I’d be inclined to keep that tail rocker at 2’’ or less to keep things fishy.

My speeddailer had a platformed deck with a concave… pretty cool.

Fin placement… fore fins… rear dot on my dialer was 11’’ and 1 1/8 off rail.

rear fins… rear dot at 5.5’’ and 1 1/2’’ off rail

(note that these 6’0’’ speeddialer placement numbers were also the same as on my friend’s 6’4’’ speeddialer)

dailer rails were down but with a soft edge through most of the board. I did not really like the ‘softness.’ My superbank, however, has down rail with a pretty crisp tuck throughout blending to fully hard in the tail. The crisp tuck makes it really skatey and I love it. the dialer felt sort of sticky.

the hynsons I’ve seen are twinzers, which is a different animal–but I love them! I think the hynson rear dot in your size range is at 8’’ for the primary fin and 1 1/4 off rail. The leading fin trailing edge over laps the leading edge of the primary fin by 1/4 inch and is toed parallel to the primary with 1 1/4’’ ‘breathing room’ between the two.

hope this rambling is somewhat useful

Hey Hunter,

Some really good info you provided here, nice and specific !!!

Was just wondering what sort of toe has been used in speed dialer set up … would love to know !!

I’ve yet to see a speed dialer set up here in Oz … been thinking about the turbo option for a new board on the racks.

In addition, if you could provide toe spec’s for twinzer that would be great, when you say 1 1/4" breathing room do you mean the gap between both primary and lead fin ???

Thanks old mate

W

Hunter,

Smeee again

I forgot to mention that i did see your posting on this very subject in May 2006, but it had no mention of toe in details.

I did do some reseach before bugging you on it … in case you get pissed !!

Anyway

Hi Tim -

Congrats on winning that blank and good of you to mention US Blanks. They generously provided several blanks, a couple of seconds to plane/sand and a couple of t-shirts.

Grab a few rails on boards you find and check where they put the fat spot. Some fish I’ve seen have pretty thick rails and the thickness is sometimes carried back pretty far before tapering rather suddenly at the tips.

Also note that an old problem with traditional fish was the tendency to track. Subtle curves in the outline along with rocker and fin tweaks have improved that issue.

Here’s some pics of an oldie…
