Ding-All resin eating foam

Was attempting to fix a small hole in my epoxy board (closed cell foam) with Ding-All epoxy resin when I noticed the resin had started eating the foam. I’ve never had any problems with this resin on any of my other epoxy boards although this is the first time I’ve used it with a closed cell foam board. Any ideas what’s causing this?

Concerning the hole itself, it was a fairly small hole up against the FCS plug. Obviously the hole is larger now but nothing dramatic; about 0.5" in diameter and close to 0.5" deep. Would filling the hole with resin and cloth fragments suffice or should I put a small foam plug inside the hole?

Are you sure it’s epoxy resin? Sounds like you have poly resin. That would explain the foam melting.

Yep, it’s labeled epoxy resin although this was a first thought of mine; that possibly the resin was mislabeled.

Smell it, smell the resin. if it smell like anything much then it’s not epoxy.

Not much odor to it at all. I’m definitely scratching my head over this one.

No idea why this happened, but as far as the hole is concerned, .5" diameter x .5" deep, I wouldn’t bother with a foam plug. Just mix some type of filler like cavocil or microballoons with the resin to lighten it. then top it with cloth.

There are many epoxies that are not compatible with some EPS boards, especially the 5 minute epoxies. I had a board made in Slovakia (name witheld) where foam melted using an epoxy that was fine with Surftech/Tuflite and domestic EPS. Some XTR boards will exhibit the same problems. I have yet to encounter any EPS board that will react with RR, so I advise that you use that. The 2-part epoxies in the plunger applicators are very convenient, but unless you have past success on a particular board with it, don’t use it. Even if the damage is just a surface crack in the glass, if it’s reactive the foam will melt and you’ll never know it. Usually, the fill will keep blowing air out a small hole if the foam behind it melted.

Could it have been an exotherm problem and not foam disolving? Mike

Howzit bgl500, Had the same thing happen to a friend on a trip to Cabo, at least he was able to find another brand and it worked. Really threw us for a loop. Aloha,Kokua

mmm… resin.

some epoxies get hot when you have alot of it in one spot. it may have melted it from the heat of it curing.

Nope, not an exotherm problem. Some 5 min types will melt just like poly resin.
