------ Ding Repair on my 70's board ----- Need help!

Hey guys I bought this awesome little single fin shortboard thing from a garage sale in Dover Shores, NB many years ago. I rode it a bunch and it works in-sane. It de-lamenated really bad right on the deck where the balls of my feet press down on turns. So I finally got around to trying to fix it for the summer. I cut back a lot of glass a solid 1’x 5" peice and exposed it back to foam.

I got this product called micro ballons from my buddy, and mixed this with sanding resin to form a paste to fill the area. It stays clear when mixed with resin unlike cavocil which turns white. So I smeared this in the low area using my body work techniques. It was like vasoline when I smeared it. Oh yeah I catolized after mixing resin and balloons. Now I think it may have been a product more for boats. Anyway it hardened and I sanded it flat with the board and then laid down a laminating coat with fiberglass. I let that harden overnight and went for a surf today. I skipped the hot coat but dont know if that would have done much to save the ding. So as soon as I started surfing the board I noticed the reapair cracking all over. You can see long cracks in the fill and glass. When I got the board home it was leaking some water from the new cracks.

Well guys Im bummed I spent a ton of time fixing this board only to have to do it all again. The board is insane and I have to resurect it! Ive grown up on shortboards and longboards and this board is the best of both worlds.

Does anyone know who shaped this board? I cant find a signature or any marking on it what so ever. Either way its a ton of fun.

See my pictures below guys to get an idea of what the cracking looks like. I need advice on how to save this board and properly fix so I can surf it till I fall over. I need to fix it myself so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading…

That amount of cracking is likely due to too much resin, not enough glass. Resin in large masses is brittle and must be reinforced with glass. This is why boards are not simply coated with resin, alone.

if the filler you are using turns clear when mixed then you are use cabocile if it turns white then you are using micro ballons, pesonly i feel that cabocile is a stronger filler but more brittle than micro ballons, so like sammy said theres too much resin in the reapair, i would try and sand it all back as close to the foam as possible then fill with microballons then add 2 layers of 6 oz cloth over the entire repair then sand and hot coat

good luck
