Dirty laps

Ok wel I have to figure out why I ruined two clear boards. They both have dirty laps and fin patches. They are quite noticeable under the light. Clean bucket was used. No styrene on the second one. I thought that was it on the first. Same squeegees I always use. Maybe the glass? I do so much color I haunt done clear with this 6oz in about 9 months. Did a color board and it came out fine. I don’t like mysteries that cost me money…

The precautions a guy normally takes when doing clears are often neglected when a glasser gets into doing lots of color work for a period of  time.  Things like blowing off the blanks throughly.  The type of gloves that we wear.  Sanding laps and fin patches too rigorously, which can result in heat and discolorization.  I also see alot of guys on this forum who do everything in one room which also can result in cosmetic probs.

i set my fin boxes before glassing just so i dont need to lay fin patches and kick up all that extra dust before hotcoating. dont really understand what u mean by dirty lap lines are they litterally dirty likebrown in spots? or is are they tinted?

i run future fin boxes and dont really understand laying patches. i mainly river surf and have done some gnarly damage to alot of fins but never have busted out a finbox

gloves could be the prob. I learned that the hard way. it came out with brown/orange stained spots....i think they were rubber latex. I use nitriles.

I did grab a new brand of gloves I will check. Thats a good one.

Also if you are putting in futures you are supposed to to football patches on the under your main lam.

I have glassed hundreds of boards and only had this happen once so its gottta be the gloves.

Rubber or rubber latex gloves are definitly a "No-No".  Even some types of latex can be a problema with Polyester.  Epoxy you are ok with just about anything other than Rubber "surgical" gloves.  You don't need the footballs with Futures.  Most glass shops in So. Calif. do not use the football patches.  They just glass over and cut with the botton layer.  The little known problem with Poly is that if you over sand an area such as your laps or fin box patches before you hotcoat, the area you have done the sanding will come up brown or yellow when you hotcoat.  Lam resin is really not meant to be sanded and the heat from exstenive sanding turns the cloth and resin brown.   That's why I always reccomend to guys when using a die grinder to sand laps to hit it "once around the block lightly".  A poor lap and heavy sanding will turn it brown. If you've got a bad lap; die grind it lightly and leave it.  Hotcoat it and then sand.

“Dirty Laps” is the title of my next porn flick.

I like it...send me a copy.

Also using gloves and you touch all sorts of stuff because you think you are superman with the gloves on, i.e.,  I'll rub out a smudge with acetone...because I have my superman gloves on. well if you pick up a screwdriver with yo supermaber gloves on..sometimes the color of the handles comes off on the superman gloves... den you touch da surfamabord.

Den you wonder how you go a red or blue tinge to the supermabord. Craftsman screwdrivers have Red and Blue handles, Stanley are Yellow and Orange...These things i know..don't ask me how i know.

haha Yep there latex but not nice ones. I dont sand my footballs bc i glass them with the bottom layer of glass. It wasn’t over sanding I am thinking it had to be the gloves. I use very little resin and have to rub the laps with my fingers sometimes like epoxy. I am making myself a board soon maybee I should just make it clear to find our whats happening. Today will be a day of cleaning everything twice and tossing all my old buckets. I can’t have this shit happen ever again. I pride myself on the higher quality of my glass work.

I would just fall back on the old yellow and blue gloves that we used to buy from Fiberglass Hawaii.  Rinse 'em in acetone after every use, shake 'em out and hang 'em up.  Stick with what you know works.  The name escapes me at the moment.  They can be purchased on line.  Good for multiple usages.  I could use the same pair for weeks.  Never a smudge.  As I said just about any thing works for Epoxy.

Yep it was the gloves thanks guys. I have used those from fiberglass hawaii for a few years but the dogs ripped them up when I took them in the truck.

Howzit McDing Check out the Mr. Clean rubber gloves, they look exactly like the F.H. gloves. I used to buy the F.H. gloves by the box which had 10, loved them. Aloha,Kokua

Yeah those gloves had a brand name and type, but I can't for the life of me remember it.  I'll look it up tonite.  I've seen 'em online before.  Maybe thru Uline.  Never rinse 'em in lacquer thinner.  That's one chemical they don't like.

Actually i found out its my resin. I usually get the 249 #3 series but I guess I didnt this time. THe #3 has the whitner thing in it. Well I guess I am not doing clears for 55 gallons… After I sanded the board out it wasnt as noticable and the customer couldnt tell I still gave him a discount bc I can tell. Well live and learn, I guess I will be doing a discount on color for a while.

i use to get dirty laps....................

.........but i don't go to strip bars anymore.

i use latex, never had a real problem with them.

go get some dishwashing gloves they work too.

nites work......okay.

or just get some re-useable heavy duty jobs.

i like using latex medical grade gloves.

i buy over-sized ones and put two or three layers on at a time.

that way i can strip off a set and instantly have a clean pair on.

in the past i use to use loads of acetone.............now days ..........very little to none..........i pitch everything after one use.

and this is with polyester resin mind you.

also,if it's yellowing from latex gloves, just set it out in the sun............the yellowing will vanish.

here's a tip.............it's not the gloves that cause the yellowing.............it's the powder coating on them.

get powderless gloves.

That doesn't make sense.  Who told you that?  I'm gonna ask around down here about that.   Don't see how a clearer/whiter resin could make a differance.  What cloth are you using?

Yep----  You can buy those gloves thru Uline about $12.00 each in a carton of twelve.

keep in mind i lap all my boards with gloved hands.............no squeeges.

and 95% or better are clear glass jobs.

acetone on blanks are a no-no!!!!!!!!!!!

this will brown the works horribly!!!!!!!!
