Any of you had the experience of getting a head cold after surfing in or around Venice, CA? Just wondering. S.
Havn’t been up to Venice lately… but the water has been horid down in OC. Smells and tastes like some serious funk… and I’m not talking 'bout Bootsy.
I get out there occasionally. It is probably not near as funky now as it gets after a good rain. Who knows what lurks in the LA water? Mike, have you been up to Malibu or other points north? No cleaner water but better waves. E-mail me if you want to go surfing sometime! Roger
There is a head cold circulating - on land. Good stuff is nasal spray with GSE in it. grapefruit seed extract. They should have it at Whole Foods or Wild Oats. I keep some in the truck for those winter days when I get so much water in my sinus cavity - it runs like a facet when I take my suit off…or if the water seems funky. I think Nutri-Biotics makes the nasal spray. Unlike all the other nasal sprays, this one doesn’t get you addicted or wind up inflamming your tissues…you can use it more than 3 days, etc. All natural, nontoxic. GSE kills something like 500 viruses and 700 kinds of bacteria. It also comes in a bottle so you can put drops in your water - when travelling (a must for baja trips) - or on any cuts. There are all kinds of uses for it. You can put it in a spray bottle with water and use it like Lysol on counter tops - bathroom or in the dshwasher. Kills germs and with No Chemicals! I haven’t been in the water near Venice for a few years. I went right after 4th of July once - it was soooo disgusting…full and I mean full of plastic bags, all gross and slipping by or getting stuck on my legs…the beach gets so completely trashed on the big summer holidays. Water is VERY clean up at County Line. Red tide didn’t get there and it hasn’t rained in ages. This time of year is generally the cleanest, as it is the furthest from the rains. Feel better. Birdie
The water in the bay is disgusting I surfed manhattan once and had a 7 day spell of gastrointestinitis *sp I try to stay away after that http://paradoxdistribution.com
The Santa Monica Bay rule of thumb for many Ventura County surfers in recent years is nothing south of Pt. Dume is worth risking the water quality. That includes not eating fish caught down there, too. http://www.vagabondsurf.com/WaylandRevisited.html
yea my bro got sick from surfing el porto
OH my God! You guys are freaking me out! I’m going out to San Diego and LA in 2 weeks and was going to surf out there! Should I expect to be sick!? :0 I’m from Miami and our water is pretty clean out here!
I surf the area very often and have never gotten sick. Lately there has been alot of red tide around and that always gives me a sinus infection. Check the water quality at www.healthebay.org
California is getting water quality audited on a weekly basis. There are a number of resources for checking water quality at specific beaches - usually county by county. Unless there is an active water quality issue - rain within 72 hours, sewage line break, or just constant unhealthy levels, you can generally go in the water anyplace…at least once in a while. Most beaches are posted if there is a severe problem. Come on out, check water quality before you leave home so you have some target ideas and some alternatives, and have a good time.
