Hello… When I glass the deck on this next board I am going to lay down 1 layer of 4oz. (of course after the bottom is done ) and then do the 2nd layer… 6oz… after the first is set … Do I need to sand in between the 2 ??? Can I sand a little before the second lam??? Will it hurt anything to sand in between ???
The reason for doing this is because the last board I did ...which was my 1st one... the 2 layers of glass got pretty messed up as far as moving around .. 1 moved then fixing that the other one moved .. Wind ,inexperience, excuse ,excuse..
It just seems like it will be easier to do 1 at a time . May weigh more ... May be stronger . But it seems like it will turn out better for me ... Help ! Please.. D.J.
no need to sand in between. although, you’re inviting a whole new problem this way. the deck will be tacky from the first layer when you’re laying down the second layer. that means you really only get one shot at it. once you lay down the second layer of glass, it’ll stick a bit to the first layer, and moving it around could screw up the cloth. so…when you lay it down, make sure it’s just where you want it. i’ve done it this way before (different colored resin tints on bottom and deck), and it isn’t a problem just so long as you’re careful. good luck.
Thanks for the reply … I never thought about how sticky it would be . Still I have to try it . Can I lightly sand between coats? Seeing as it is gonna be sticky I guess it may be gummy to the paper too…
Oh well I guess I will see . Thats part of the fun … Learning… Thanks D. J.
Trick to keep two or three layers from shifting is to pour a junior football sized pool of resin (less if you like) at the center of area, let sozk justa bit, then take 1" bites softly with your squeegee, emanating outwards like the rays of the sun.
Initial pour saturates thru 2 layers in about 45 seconds, pinning it to the blank.
If you want to try it your way, let the first lam cure fully, like 2 days in winter, before laming the next layer.
I would suggest to you to laminate with it. Why? Well for instance in this case you could glass the deck with one layer of the 4oz. Cure it in the sun for about 10 minutes. Then take it in the shade. Come back an hour later and the deck should be nearly tack free. allowing the glass to lay on rather smoothly.
