Do SUP's in the lineup bug you???

...then imagine how you're gonna feel when these things hit the costco aisles!!

yes , i hate them .

they have no business  being in the line up with " normal " surfers

At least a longboard is capable of stylish maneuvers. The best rides I've seen on a Sup look kookish. I'm sure there's an exception somewhere, but not in SB. Laird needs to be assassinated before he has another bright idea.

I really wasn't trying to pick on sup's (I actually met a laid back SUP'er at Malibu the other day who was a really nice guy) - only wanted to say they seem pretty mellow compared to this abberation I just saw today on craigslist: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/spo/1763256207.html

It's the man, not the machine.

Exactly. Where I am, the problem is that 90% of SUP owners do not know how to surf. Most have never even tried any form of surfing before they bought an SUP. They are a hazard to anyone around them, and paddle for every wave they see from way outside the normal line-up.

They do NOT belong at spots where people surf.

you said it

I've seen one at our beach. He's one of the regular surfers. Stays out of the way and doesnt hog waves, no problem whatsoever.

one of these...?

i wish that was the case around here , but its not .

Nah SUP

Do they bother me… uhm, only when they’re in the water. Go find a nice knee-high wave to ride and leave us alone.

In California that would be illegal to operate in the surf zone. If it has a motor and registration numbers it is not allowed within 100 yards of where people are swimming. i.e. the surf zone.

Back in 1987, when I was in high school, my brother was stationed on an aircraft carrier.  They had this thing called a Tiger Cruise, where male family members could ride the ship back from Pearl Harbor to San Diego.  They probably don't do that kind of thing any more, but I got to ride with him on the trip which took a total of seven days.  As we were leaving Pearl Harbor a guy on a motor powered surfboard, like the one you posted, started following us.  He was surfing the wake of the carrier, which made a pretty big wave.  I was amazed because he followed us for quite a long ways out to sea before heading back to the island.

The last time that I looked at the CA Harbors and Navigation code the use of paddles constitutes being a powered craft, and powered craft are required to keep clear of swimmers and surfers. My recollection is that the minimum allowed separation is 100 feet–but I’m not sure about that and perhaps it could be meters or yards instead.

SUP'rs dont bother me,,,yet

I talk to them and let them know its not appropriate to put anyone in an unsafe situation...

basicly I tell them to keep their distance and dont hog waves,

they are usualy very humble

People, in general, in the linup bug me.

But what are you gonna do?

two people out… surfing.

four people out plenty of waves  …surfin’

ten people out …social studies.

twenty people out   … animal behavior.

every body on the same equipment … schooling

different  styles of equipment … interscholastic meet

each and every person on non repeating styles of equipment …

all competent -  constantly rotating boards … higher education

social behavior in a surfing situation… a tenuous affair

likely to warp at a moments indiscretion.

predicting the spark of stupidity … low amp science

seeing the near future … not hard.

griping  …  acute abdominal pain (especially in infants) 2. To cause sharp pain in the bowels

… ambrose …

esp - ethical stand paddling … three guys out?

leave with the paddle for a nobody out zone.

stand paddling in a crowd of surfers … questionable motives.

Sorry, your right, 100ft not yards. But also not within 200 ft of a beach where swimmers are present. You are right about the SUPs. The law clearly states these are prohibited for use around “Swimmers”. This is never enforced as far as I know.

651.1. Bather definition. As used in this chapter, unless the context clearly
requires a different meaning, ‘‘bather’’ or ‘‘bathing’’ means a person floating,
swimming, wading, or bodysurfing, with or without the use of a flotation device,
including, but not limited to, floating upon or with the aid of a surfboard, paddle board,
surfmat, innertube, life preserver, or air mattress, except a flotation device which is
designed to be propelled by sail, mechanical means, power, oars, or paddle.

Beginners in the line-up bother me. Especially Sup's. Do not learn to SUP at a crowded break.

However, as an longtime surfer who now prefers to SUP, I want my share of the biggest and best waves. I want everyone else to get their share, too. I must fit in OK, because I get no bad vibes from others while I am out.
