There's some real irony here as this forum gets revenue from SUP companies.
YES! Funny thing, i wrote a few words about SUP a couple weeks ago on my blog (in french…) and came close to the answers we can read here, but overall here is my point of vew: if you want to glide on a SUP just go where none surfer stands! If not, may be here is the solution:
http://markissurfboards.blogspot.com/
Call me all the names you can think of; I want one! Not a SUP, one of those motorized thingies. That looks like a panic for bay side antics!
One of those “motorized thingies” would be the perfect weapon for terrorizing SUP clowns!!
Or you’re just not paying attention (;-D)
I was at a crowded beach break early Sunday morning. There were a lot of people, but no incidents of collision or overt anger. Then three sweepers(SUP) came into the line up. They were in the way on several waves, while they were paddling back out. They couldn’t handle the whitewater and kept charging the open face of the wave no matter where the surfer was riding the wave. they kept falling of while trying to make the open face and actually collided with to long time locals. The yelling and cursing ensued and one of the sweepers took a swing at a surfer with his paddle. When I went in there were a few guys on shore waiting for the sweepers to come in. I don’t know what happened after that.
These sweepers could surf, they had some skill and should have known better, but they didn’t care about anyone but themselves. Lots of people are selfish, but you don’t get to be dangerous. They need to have some distance from surfers, and stay out of head high beach break. A paddle should not be a weapon.
Do hemorrhoids bug you?
I want a T shirt that says:
If you don’t surf here, don’t SUP here.
I think you longboard guys who get pissed at SUPs are hilarious. I think it’s great that you now have to deal w/ people who are on equipment that allows them to get into the wave before you. Karmic payback for every time you’ve been the longbarn sitting outside guys on shortboards, picking off sets.
I think longboards should stay out of head high beach break too.
I don’t see how you are going to get longboarders out of the line up. That’s not going to happen, unless the break is just too much for them. Good point about Karma, in that I think you are right . Sweepers are mostly people who just want to get their wave count up. Regardless of anything. It used to be people were going longer and longer, now they are just going bigger and fatter.
By the way that incident I was talking about happened in an area that does not allow boating; not even kayaks are legal. But standing up with an oar is so different?
Here’s to riding the shortboard at an uncrowded reef. Anybody got one of those (Uncrowded Reef)?
I was out,by myself, this past epic winter.this spot is outside a nice size bay, where a tiger has taken a bite out of someone’s board already.it was perfect conditions, Kona wind slowly building, but BIG,BIG sets were coming through, and I was feeling a little lonely out there.then this guy paddles out on a SUP,I am HAPPY,I got some company.First set takes him out, breaks his leash, his board is gone,so is he,I am all by myself again,oh well, turned out to be a memorable 3 hour session, till the wind got too strong.
Are SUP’s any different from Waveskis? If you have surfed Rincon in the past 20 years, you’ll know what a pain in the ass it is to be around any paddles… if you have, you know who.
I have a few friends who SUP. One guy is a pretty good surfer anyway and during his first outing managed to catch consistant waves after 5 minutes. I’ve ridden one before and I did enjoy it. Caught a few waves, had a few laughs.
Do they bug me? It depends.
The first time I went out we were at a break by ourselves. Small day, maybe waist high and slow. Longboard only, too mushy for my paipo. We took the sup and the logs out. Sup was over in one area, longboard in another. That worked because we weren’t all piled on top of each other. Plenty of room and with 5 of us out there (4 surfed, the other guy just paddled around) it was cool.
If the break was crowded with your usual assortment of longboards, shortboards, funboards, bodyboards, etc then no. I saw one at a popular break I used to frequent. Board might have been a rental…guy took off for a wave and had really no idea how to control it. His eyes bugged out, he looked like he was gonna crap himself and he was holding on for dear life as it went straight in (before he pearled it). While I do enjoy the occaisonal pearling I don’t enjoy watching a 35# 13’ board with a 10’ leash make it’s way unattended through the lineup.
Like anything there is a time and a place.
I longboard and ride a paipo. I’m not that great on the longboard, usually a few turns or a down the line run before either beaching it or bailing. But I know my limits. If I roll up to the home break and there are 100 people sitting there I’ll find a different peak.
Hozit Brose, Since my cancer surgery I can't bend my head back enough to see in front of me when paddleing and knee paddleing is not an alternative due to bad knees. Alot of our friends have suggested getting a SUP but I am kind of leery of the attitude towards them. It seems it may be the only choice I have and am thinking that I can make one or buy a used one and get used to the paddleing on Lake Havasu then take it over to Ca and try it in the surf. I am not worried about the surfing part after over 50 years surfing. What I am interested in is is there a spot that anyone knows of near the Malibu area that would be a good spot to try doing it but not get in the way of my surfing brothers, there is going to be enough laughing at my Az licese plates let alone riding a SUP. I really want to get back in the water one way or another and this may be my only choice. Damn I miss surfing and I am taking 2 boars to Havasu and the Las Vegas airport guys are going to really get a laugh out of seeing them come down the baggage ramp. Back in 94 I went to Havasu from San Clemente and I had to stop in Needles Ca and stopped and asked some water Dept guys for some directions and they looked at the board on my 240Z funny, I told them I was looking for Doheny and think I took the wrong turn off, that get a laugh out of them. Howzit Brose, Don't know if you are familar with Lake Havasu but I can park my truck by the channel and paddle out of it and around the point and back to the other end of the channel right back to where I started. Not sure if it is 5 miles but it is a good stretch and I am sure it will do for the getting in shape factor.By the way everysurfer was a great help and I appreciate the PM's.Aloha,Kokua
