“Its a business first and foremost…”
Sounds like you’ve already made your decission.
But even if it is only the bottom line you care about most, it may backfire. I personally will not buy any surfboard not made in California. In fact, I try to buy as many made in california products as possible (beer is easy) so as to keep as much of my money in the local economies as possible and because, hey, i’m a Californian and just feel more comfortable doing business with locals.
I was also somewhat disgusted by your mention of not having to worry as much about the environmental issues as a selling point. I would hope that you would want to be as clean as possible in your business, regardless of what the laws are where you are doing it. It’s the right thing to do.
there is no correlation between happiness and success in business
Howzit Slim, How do you determine what products are made in Ca., and are the products that make that product made in Ca.. Here in Hawaii they have addressed this issue and a product doesn't have to be 100% made in Hawaii to get a made in Hawaii sticker. Most blanks are blown in Ca but what about the chemicals that go into making them, then there's the fiberglass, resin ,acetone, cheap brushes, tape, paint, rubbing compound, polish bonnets and polish, etc, etc. This is just the tip of a big iceberg. I think a better way to look at it is to buy American made products that are made with products made in America. Aloha Kokua
Ah, good point. A lot of components to things or ingredients come from all over the place. I guess I generally focus in on the part of the process that I think adds the most value to the product and in the case of surfboards that would be where they are shaped and glassed (and not where the foam or glass or resins are made). I wonder how they decide if a “made in ____” label can go on a product or not?
Howzit Slim, usually they come up with a percentage figure to determine just that. A while back they did it here in Hawaii, bit I can't remeber just what the % is. Just recently they decided that Nihihau shell leis had to be made on that island to be called and sold as Nihihau shell leis. Heck I can pick the same shells from Tunnels beach but that doesn't make it a Nihihau shell lei. Aloha, Kokua
Custom shaping is an intimate business. People want to know there shaper and be able to talk to him throughout the process(I know alot of you pros hate that). If your business is mostly production then I think that the shops that carry your boards would probably not mind. Especailly if you could bring them boards of the same quality at lower prices. I think that your custom business would probably fall off considerably. Surfers are in tune with the ocean and want to know that their shaper is also. If you can get them to understand that you still surf alot and that moving to AZ is to make them a less expensive board, who knows, maybe the move wont even hurt your customs. Make the move that is best for you and your family.

I probably know more about Arizona and living and running a business there since… I’m in Arizona. My wife and I decided to move west a couple years ago and I looked at CA. No way! Too crowded and too expensive. Running a business there? NO WAY! The government gets enough of my money, plus the landlord and the insurance companies…??? Not for me. The surf in CA isn’t worth the extra money that would keep me from enjoying REAL and UNCROWDED waves somewhere I can travel to easily from here with the money I DON"T have to give up to an overstressed state government and their lobbyist friends. Anyone thinking it’s going to get better there, better think again. And then I also get to snowboard all winter here. By the way, Nevada ain’t bad either.

Yes, much of FL is heading the same way. I do still have a business in FL though. Business there isn’t too bad… yet.
Hey F1
I don’t know why you want to go to Arizona to save money, you seem pretty good at taking peoples money and giving nothing back in return!

Howzit dropin, Checked the links, sounds like somebody is gonna put a hit out on him one of these days. If some body tried that on Kauai they would definitly be escorted right to the Lihue airport. Aloha, Kokua
…yet another reason to do your own shaping and glassing…peace and waves…
